I agree with Mr or Mrs, or Miss? Elubas....
People taking time over moves

I don't understand why complain about when You can control the time just play 24hs games,or play 300 games at time so you will have one move on the go every time or don't play online chess,You can play live games on a long time control 45/45 60/30 90/30 .
Is like said I don't like the food when You prepare your own lunch.

Exactly. I normally have 20-40 games going, and I move fast. If I stumble accross another fast player, cool, I often finish games in one sitting. But if he wants to take 7 days, also cool.If I sit here, and nobody moves in any of my games, I start a few more.

So leave aside that even though the European countries have roughly 1000 years head start on us, don't mind that we spent our blood and treasure to save your rumps from the Huns twice and then also the Soviets, don't even consider any of that. But recognize that without American innovation and ingenuity driving the world's economy, parts of Europe would still be tending goats and harvesting cork and hoping to get running water some day.
You're welcome.
Slow down, Captain America.
In WWI, Americans were welcome reinforcements, nothing more nor less. Same in WWII. And by the way, the Soviets were the clear deciding factor in winning WWII, not the Americans. Also, we did not need saving from the Soviets. The problem was between the USA and the Soviet Union. Europe only got drawn into that by virtue of treaties. Cuban Missile Crisis? We wouldn't have been so close to armageddon without the US to try to depthcharge a nuclear submarine. We were saved from nuclear apocalypse by a Russian officer refusing to agree with his Captain to blow the US warship in question out of the water with a nuclear torpedo.
As for the US driving the world's economy, do you really think that's what you're doing? It looks like drunk-driving to me, if so.
Yes, there are lots of marvels to come out of Silicon Valley, but plenty from Europe too. We'll see your "Superchurch" and raise you a Large Hadron Collider.
And yes, there is plenty of merit in America too. I have many dear American friends. Plenty of cool, intelligent, Americans. You're not one of them; rather, you're kinda letting the side down.

Why oh why are they always from the USA?????
It's true, Americans are very used to creating our own realities without respect to the hidebound and sterile continental mindset. Sometimes it goes to excess.
Get over it. It's that same attitude which creates 90% of the world's new medicines and most of the other innovations. Where do you think the telephone, television, communications satellites, personal computers, smart phones, internet, etc. were invented? Shout out to Marconi on the radio, and Tesla for many inventions, too, many others over the years but not so much lately, eh?

Hmm... Do we have to take that? From a man who calls my first move impotent?

He called my first move impotent... The b......
No offense, but the English is rather like rowing a boat with a rope.
I'm scared

If only Fischer, Kasparov, and Carlsen had you to coach them, eh? They wouldn't have wasted their time with the English.

Fear is good, and necessary for survival.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
This would make a great song for black

Oh, please! What % of their games did those worthy players begin with the English? A tiny one? They each had a few 1 Nf3 games in there, too, Fischer actually played 1 b3 once - do you think that meant he thought it was good?
Take two Viagra and call a nurse, maybe it will clear your head.
Now see what you did?!? Oh God... You made him angry...

It is always interesting to return to a thread one starts to see what twists and turns and deviations have occured since visiting last. True with one.
Thanks for those who have posted on topic - your views have been noted and it has helped me to see other perspectives. As for me, notwithstanding allowing for vast differences in approach and personalities, my preference remains with the 3 day online format, with people making timely moves and, am I asking too much, some verbal acknowledgement and even exchanges along the way.
Re. USA, it is true that the perception of many folk this side of the Pond is that some of the wackiest ideas emanate from there and when coupled with a vitriolic delivery can make a pretty lethal combination. Having said that, in the almost one year of playing chess.com I have met and befriended online many people from all over the world and many of them have been Americans, who I am proud to refer to as friends.
I particularly enjoyed, as often I do, DavidStyles' erudite prose and broadly share his WW1/2 observations. I would reiterate though that the USA entry into both wars, albeit late, was imho the decisive factor in Allied victory.

Lol, he'll get over it.
If he's going to be rude to opponents on the grounds of them not playing an opening he likes, he's setting himself up for trouble :p

to the op, I was excited when I took up chess over a year ago and signed up for a tournament without really reading about it. There are three players here that take the entire 14 days everytime. They have a ton of games going on and just wait until the time is close, make a move, and then forget about the game, but when I check their profile they are on every day. http://www.chess.com/tournament/alans-tournament
I wish I had never joined this thing, but I really can't judge them for playing within the rules. The one guy that keeps going on vacation is a little frustrating though...

Something strange is happening on the Forums... messages not showing, showing the wrong times... ? Is it just me...

Lol, well said.
Strange that someone would accept to play a game with a time control of 3 or more days per move, expecting to instead play the whole game in one sitting. People like to take time for numerous possible motivations (loving to ponder, enjoying the relaxing nature of not being pressured to move right away, has many games going on so it would be difficult to move in all of them) -- as long as they are not doing it out of spite, I don't see what's wrong with them playing a time control that allows them to do those things. If you don't want them to be able to do those things, you shouldn't play in a time control that lets them do those things.
