Petition for Kasparov 2 Return!

Indeed, Kasparov being an old guy that he is, he can't be expected to be the same young fella that he was. However, if he does his best, shapes up both physically and mentally, show up and compete again, his endeavors will not go unnoticed. I am sure that he will get more people to pay attention to the game. We have seen this in St. Louis to some extent, it will be interesting to see more. And yes, perhaps he needs to play at slower time controls and maybe he will do better there.

Kasparov can become world champion again but in classic chess where he has enough time to devise strategy and tactics. In blitz and speed chess he played better against the top players like Nakamura, Caruana etc but he just needed a little bit extra time. In classic chess kasparov can surely win and restore his throne.

I strongly doubt that Kasparov can regain the title at any time control. The competition is just too strong. Heck even if Kasparov was in his prime today, I don't think he would be able to be the World Champ with today's players. Still, he can probably be a top 20 or perhaps even top 10 player if he tries his best. It will be interesting to see him to return - even for a short while.

But a lot of it has to do with whether he can accept the idea of being the punching bag for the younger folks. What will be interesting to see is that he can still win some games.

I agree, kasparov should return to politics. Then the Russians will once again have someone to pester with a marital aid strapped to a drone.

That's legit btw. Look it up, someone strapped a silicone toy to a drone and flew it at kasparov face

LOL, as far as I know Kasparov is irrelevant as politician - especially in Russia. There, he is viewed as a political prostitute that services the interests of the West. While his intentions may be noble, he is rather naive as a politician and therefore, it's probably better that he returns to chess. Regardless of his results, he will always be appreciated as a chess player.

But then who will the Russians fly dil-drones at? Think it through, man! It would be a travesty if it happened at a chess match.

Alas, it looks like Mr. Kasparov is truly gone from chess. He decided to trade down from a great chess player to a mediocre Russia bashing activist. Essentially, his path is quite similar to that of Fischer's. Difference being that Kasparov gave his best to the game and Fischer quit too soon.

But Kasparov, even below his prime could still offer a lot of value to chess if he came back and fought his hardest. We saw some of that in St. Louis... Unfortunately, it looks like it was the last of it. And it's still quite a loss...

That was Chess 960 mini-match. It was ok and barely counts and is better than nothing, I guess. But Kasparov can, if he dedicates himself 100%, still be a force to be reckoned with if he returns to chess.

I understand that he may want to play shorter time controls. He can do the 40 min ones. And there are other good options out there. But, the key is for him to give up on politics - something that he has been mediocre (and that's putting it mildly) - and return to chess full force. As he mentioned last year (2017), his poor performance was also due to inadequate prep time. So he will have to set politics/activism aside and do what he does best to see how good he can really be.

And I do think that he can be quite decent if he stages a full-force comeback. Instead of being in the bottom three finishes, he can be in the top three.

He's most definitely not the best anymore, but he's certainly still quite a beast when it comes to chess. And it's much nicer to see him play chess than listen to him talk about politics. He's got little clue about politics while he's still a great chess player and always will be. Chess is where he belongs, where his talents are still appreciated. He needs to get back in shape though and bring his best game. Extremely hard thing to do, but he can still do it.

I don't mind if Kasparov just plays rapid, blitz, or bullet. I think he can still be very strong in those disciplines.

I noticed that the faster it is, the more Kasparov struggles. So rapid is ok, but blitz he struggles more. So perhaps the 40 min game will be just the perfect place for him to be...

Destroyer942

I think he should honestly continue his political work, because after being champion for 20 years he admitted that he really sort of accomplished everything he wanted in chess. He is the best not in terms of today's playing strength but in terms of historical accomplishments, but now that he's ruled the very top for 20 years, and there's little chance of him climbing back up there, I think he should explore some of his other ambitions and leave chess to the younger GMs. (By the way, Magnus will defend his title).
