The main misconception with stalemate being a win is that the stalemating side is the one winning. The stalemating side could literally have a lone king, which is insufficient mating material, so why should stalemate be a win when checkmate isn't even possible? Not to mention the endgame would become a joke as a side with a pawn, or even just a king and knight could win!
