PGN readers for Android

Sort:
Kempelen

Hello,

I own an Android device and would like suggestions on:

a) The best software to study PGN commented games. Would prefer a light pgn reader.

b) Where to download PGN commented files.

With both, I could study commented games anywhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Fer.

There're a couple of programs in the market. I only want to comment on two of them I know best because I'm the author of both of them :-)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.scid.android (free)

and

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kalab.pgnviewer (trial version, pro version available for a small fee)

The first one is free, uses a different format for storing games, is targeted at big databases, and has a PGN import functionality. The second one I've created especially for viewing/editing PGN files with easy navigation in mind. If you're missing a feature there I would be glad to receive suggestions.

A good source for commented games is here: http://www.angelfire.com/games3/smartbridge/

Commented games of the current chess world championship are available here: http://twiclive.com/silverlive.htm

The pro version of PGN Master allows editing.

You can edit a PGN using a text editor, there are a few light out there.

The two best out there:

PGN Master as mentioned above. Great for reviewing pgns of full annotated games.

ichess and Analyze This! (they go hand in hand) by Asim Pereira. The best for puzzle-type PGN problem sets as it'll spit the problems back to you to solve one by one.

Check out "Lucas Chess". People have reviewed it here on Chess.com. Has many features for setting up your own training.

Update: Lucas Chess does not have an Android version yet. It runs only on Windows (or Mac using Windows emulator).

BoardMonkey

Droidfish is a capable app.  You have to move PGNs from download file to Droidfish/PGN file to read PGNs.  Analyse this just finds the PGNs on its own and reads them but board isn't as big as the Droidfish board.  I couldn't get Scid on the Go to work with an engine which is good for assessing your guesses of the players' moves.
