Physical Chess VS Electronical Chess.

Hi guys, my name is NC and i am a product design student.

Currently, i am doing a project on chess (both western and eastern). And i am having some difficulties obtaining certain informations for my research.

I play a little chess myself every now and then, i may not be as avid of a player as most of you here so please pardon me if i make any slip ups. Laughing

So basically, i personally believe that most players of chess would rather use a physical chess set as compared to playing on an electronic medium. Reason being that the whole gaming experience is different.

Like the emotional pleasure of slapping a chess piece on the table...

Looking an opponant in the eye and scaring the shit out of him/her.

Knocking an opponant's chess piece down when you take down one of theirs.

Fiddling with a chess piece to calm you down when you are thinking and making a move.

Stuff like that. I hope to hear more inputs from you veterans, whether you agree or disagree on the stuff i said. No problem. Any comments are welcome as i am creating a chess set for people like you guys.

My aim is to create 2 chess sets. One being the new generation hi-tech chess set. And the other is to create a new generation of low-tech chess set.

So i hope to hear from you guys soon..! Cheers.! Laughing

Well a flat board is just something different. If you're used to a flat board, you'll have trouble "seeing" on a real 3d one.

For me, it's usually easier to see tactics on a 2d computer screen, as that's how I usually train. It's far harder for me to see it on a real one. However, I'd like to improve my real board chess vision and do prefer a physical chess set when given the choice.

One great advantage of electronic sets, however, is that there's no need to take notation. It's quite a distraction for me in OTB play.

Me too, lack of strong chess playing friends or club. Questioable if it is better to design flash/java chessboard and pieces for computer play sepecially 3D, than the "real" one.

I like heavy not too glossy peices with good distinction between Q and B and Q and K, not too black or white pieces - especially some gloss white colors, wooden board and piceces are a must for classy chess set as well as classical look ( don't like something like LOTR figurines or such), like a bit of cotton (green) or similar material at the botom for a quiet movement but still to retain stability and loudness when stomping some square. Coordinates are nice, little clasp in the middle always gives people problems, little metalic plank with the makers name is nice....

I've never liked the 3d view some chess programs have, never even came close to the real thing. I do echo your call for coordinates-they're vital to me.

for me i am much much more used to playing OTB and i see more tactics and stuff for some reason

I want to avoid all that psychological crap and just focus on the game at hand. Online means you don't care if your opponent is 6 years old or 80 years old or doesn't smell so good. You just care what the board is telling you.
