I have a simple question that I think I know the answer to but am not wholly convinced. Why should you attack with pawns in a closed center and pieces with an open center. My thinking is that if the center is open, the opposing side will more easily be able to access the weaknesses behind your advanced pawns and play in the center would beat play on the wing. For instance, if black is able to break with d5 in the sicilian defense, it often leaves white's position riddled with holes because the open center allows black to make use of the squares behind the advanced pawns. Is my understanding correct?
