Planning on dedicating a month to improving in chess, How far do you think I'll get?

I'm Currently rated 800. How far do you think I can get in a month of chess? I geniunely feel like I might be able to get to something like 1300 in a month. (Yes it seems far fetched but my first thought was aiming for 1500)

You are rated 876 in rapid after nearly 300 games.

It is impossible to say how far you could get but simply doing the best you can is all that you can do.

It'd be nice to have a goal, I'm just curious what more experienced players would think is a reasonable one. happy.png

Reaching 1300, 1500 should definitely be your long term goal, but for now keep it real and set a goal of 100 elo gain. Its more realistic and when you reach it you will feel more motivated to continue with your plan. Its better than getting disappointed after a month of studying and falling short.

What's your study plan? If you want to improve quickly, you need to have a mix of playing and study (puzzles, watching videos, reviewing games, looking at opening explorer, reading books, etc)

In a month from elo 800 in rapid? It depends on how much time you have, if you got like 14 hours per day, getting to 1200 rating should be doable. My advice is to watch chessbrah BUILDING HABITS, incorporate the habits in your play according to your rating,  that, and also do puzzles on chesstempo.com I would do 50/50. So for 14 hours that would be 7 hours of puzzles and 7 hours of rapid chess.

I'd do lots of puzzles, lessons, and play ing games. Chess books are also great.

If you're genuinely an 800 player (and not overrated or underrated), then a realistic goal is to aim for being solidly in the 900 range, after a month of dedicated effort.

And that, too, would be an impressive increase in strength.

Gaining 100 Elo points in a month is no small feat at all.

All of those. I plan on aiming for 2000 in puzzles, learning a ton of endgame theory, and playing a bunch

I was actually looking for chess books, do you know the names of any that I could perhaps look for at a library?

Why not puzzles on chess.com? I already have a membership here

First, make sure that they don't have descriptive notation. Unless you know it. Descriptive is 1. P-K4 P-K4 2. N-KB3, etc. The reason that a lot of them have that is because of the Fischer boom in the 70s, when chess was at a high. Anything by Pandolfini, Reinfeld, Horowitz, and Chernev is pretty good. One of my favorites is Logical Chess: Move by Move. A great person to ask about books would be @Simaginfan. Another great one is The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal.

Good luck!

I didn't know that you had a membership here, chess puzzles here are better, because you have the same board layout as in your games. Chesstempo.com only helps you to not get too proud of yourself, because rating is not dished out as quickly.

The rating is not the point. That is important to remember.

Thanks! I'll be sure to post updates once in a while in this thread if it doesn't get locked

The key I've recently noticed with puzzles is do make sure I know the entire sequence before making a move because otherwise there's no way I'm going to see those tactics in real games. Thanks for the tips though!

Yep, the goal is definitely to improve rather than just increase rating. The goal for me to be honest is to lose as few games as possible, which will guarantee that I'm improving between games

Depends. If you can find somebody knowledgeable in putting a plan together and executing it.

It takes hard work and discipline plus, natural talent is a big bonus. Being able to learn and critically think is a prerequisite knowing from my short term experience.

You can do it. I self taught myself to 1600 on another site and I’m a slow learner.

DetonatorDave

It’s an interesting project. I’ll be following with interest. You can of course overwork it so stay fresh!

When are you starting?

I agree with this.

If the training is useful (e.g. not memorizing random openings) then 100 points in a month might be possible for a low rated player.
