Play 3 More Games Lose All Three and Get a Title?

I have an unfixed rating with ICCF Correspondence Chess.

Need to play 3 more games to receive a title. Even if I were to lose all 3 games--I would receive a title.

The title would not be recognized by chess.com to receive free membership--but it would be a title.

Note, I have actually played more than enough games to receive a title. Maybe about 17 or more games where I did very well but the person at head of US ICCF at the time did not allow those games to be rated.

If that's true, and if you want the title, then go forth and lose your way to a title!

What kind of opponents do you need? Is anyone ok? How will it be a match that suits the person at head of US ICCF?

It could be against anyone. Naturally if i did this would want an opponent or opponents rated 2400 or above.

I am not going to do this for several reasons however.

1. I do not wish to use a chess engine as my skills with a chess engine are no longer up to the level needed. Also, I do not have a data base or research etc.

2. I am only one of three people [one now deceased, RIP] who had this situation.  My preliminary games leading to the USA Championship were not rated. I did very well in those games including beating someone who is now #3 in the USA. If the games had been rated, i would already have a title and it might be as high as grandmaster.

It was only due to a quirk of the then head of ICCF that for a period of time all the preliminary sections leading to the USA Championship would not be rated. They should have been rated as all the preliminary sections were made up of masters and experts. After this short period of time [2 or  3 years?] all the preliminary sections leading to the US Championship were and have been rated. This is grossly unfair to me and former USA Champion Robin Smith [RIP too late for him] Robin Smith former USA Correspondence Champion...

3. any title less than grandmaster is not worth playing the 3 games for me.  [my current, not active rating is 2528]

PS I do not begrudge the few players who have already won their GM titles--they earned their titles.

So, you don't want to play these 3 games. Then why bothering making this kind of thread?

please let me know any tournament where i can win and get free membership?

Hope ICCF will reverse the discrimination of not counting the many games where I worked so hard.  This apparently only happened to 3 people who lost their chance for a title. One already died. I am age 76. Just a hope that ICCF will do the right thing.

But you are correct, probably should not have made this thread. Undecided

Cannot play over-the-board because of some disabilities. [cannot get the FM title by gaining 12 more rating points]

To play correspondence chess it would have to be 4 games to equal the black and whites.

Guess it is possible i might decide to play a 2 game match with one person and then another 2 game match with someone else? Maybe one or two high rated ICCF players will read this and make me an offer?  Maybe ICCF will see the discrimination and reverse the old ruling?

Maybe i am just an old man musing? Undecided

Just out of curiosity, Abshirgargadud, why is playing chess at 76 weird??  Maybe playing football, but chess?  Does one's mind die before that? Please let me know ASAP, since I'm 80 and play as well as I ever did.  I'd hate to get a reputation for being weird.  Besides, what else would I do with my time, chase girls?

Have written 3 books--2 published. Writing a book is very difficult. No more books from me.

well,it is just my personal opinion,i have never met players that old.nothing personal.

My best play is where there is plenty of time. Like the best correspondence chess used to be but without chess engines.

Have nothing against ICCF Correspondence chess as it is now with chess engines used. ICCF has to be that way and there are very good players who can use a chess engine and research better than i can and they deserve their titles and high ratings.

The way i play best only exists in places like chess.com where they start you with a very low rating or in vote chess [where i still excell]

i don't see what all the fuss is about... where is the discrimination? Because you're a senior?

The discrimination is I played a bunch of very hard fought games against very strong players and i did very well and the games were not rated by an arbitray decision by a top ICCF person. Later that decision not to rate such games was reversed but it was too late for me and a couple of other top players as we never got our games rated. If those games had been rated--i would never need 3 more games to get a title. I would have played for the grandmaster title.

i still don't see discrimination... failure or misunderstanding, perhaps, but not discrimination...

in any case, why would chess.com give you a free titled account for an engine-assisted correspondence title? Only OTB titles are valid here...

NM Viktors Pupols is still playing in, and winning, local tournaments at 84.  He is not as aggressive as he once was, but in my first game with him I got a sharp lesson in endgame fortresses--I was a whole exchange up and could do nothing.  He knows more about endgames than I think I ever will.

I am also negotiating to give lessons to a low-rated lady in her 80's.  I admire her determination to learn, and it helps drive away the thought that at 54 I might be kind of old to accomplish my own goals....

Wow you are amazing to play at 76! Really outstanding if you are also at grandmaster strength! I'm a 14 year old at 2000
