To truly improves requires study, play and reflection.
If you play so much that the other aspects are neglected, then you will just be spinning your wheels.

I can relate completely. After bouncing back and forth(thousands of games) between 900-1050 playing 10 min i can say this with 100% certainty: When aggression kicks in SHUT THE COMPUTER DOWN. You're done. If you play chess angry FORGET IT. You have lost before you began.
Further to what imirak mentioned: (and im speaking to myself) - If all you do is fire up games you will "spin your wheels". Im making myself read more and watch higher level games. Its hard because i want to play! Im learning(slowly) that this is the difference between a novice and real chess player. This applies to most everything else in life as well.
What is all this talk?? Naka says "Gotta get Angry!!"
Doesn't help!

Just had a double whisky to celebrate that I went over 1100 rating in 10 minute blitz.
Took me 14.000 games.
The secret to winning more games? Play weaker players.
That will make you a weak player. Play tougher players so that even though you lose, you're getting stronger and you can understand their strategies.
I've been playing chess for years. I usually start well, then start losing. This makes me frustrated, but I continue playing with predictable results - I lose some more. Up until about a month ago, I was playing a couple of hours a day and my rating fluctuated between 900 - 1200. Then, I got totally disillusioned with my lack of progress and only played one or two games a day. I found myself winning more often than not. I can honestly say that I've been a much happier person since I drastically reduced the amount of time that I play. Perhaps therein lies the answer - perhaps I should just give it up as a bad job...?
OK, there are around 200 people checking out this post of mine a few weeks ago and I deleted it. Bottom line - I found from own experience that after work chess releaxes me, that's the time I play, and I normally win one or two games just about every time because the mind is neutral. Then I might loose one game, have another one, loose that one and when aggression kicks in I might loose several in a row, because the brain "does not flow". I deleted my post because I broke my own rule and carried on playing and lost around 10 games in one evening and went from "Novice" to "Punching Bag" status.
Anyway, what was my point ? Aggression makes you loose.
