I mean I can't beat age 10?! Even when I think I'm winning.
He was already a titled player at that time, it'd be a miracle if you could beat him.

You can beat this guy at 25.
So I got this app and it's cool. I like it. I guess it's a contest and if you win you get to play him live. so my app tells me. "your in the running..." I can see it now. I'll be there in front of the lights and flashing cameras. Magnus will walk in. wave to the cameras. 5 minutes later I have my head in my hands. I guess I'm just a little discouraged with chess as a whole. I can't get past intermediate level and I don't think I ever will. I mean I can't beat age 10?! Even when I think I'm winning.
Out of curiosity - How old are you and how long have you been playing chess seriously?

learned the rules at age 10. Wasn't interested. Didn't play until I got a book at about 16. I read the book and played my friends. I could beat them regularly, played for about a year and then quit for school and other things. At age 25 I got interested again when I saw a Kasparov Bobby Fischer predecessors book on display at a bookstore. I played through the book and got a chessmaster game for Xbox. At 27 I started really learning the game: books, dvds, online accounts. now I'm 35 and doing all I can to get over 1600.
Very interesting and very cool. I learned the moves at 4. I had extreme interest in the game and helped launch a chess club with my kindergarten principle the next year. Soon thereafter, my life became extremely complicated, extremely quickly and ripped me away from chess and some other intellectual pursuits rather suddenly.
Long story short, I started doing tactics online one afternoon a couple of years ago and started to get terribly interested in the game. I was considering getting involved in Chess like I have now then but I got a job offer that would keep me incredibly busy for a good year or two and I just didn't have the time to devote. I knew I'd come right back to it though afterwards and ...here I am.
I'm 32 now and playing my first rated OTB games on Wednesday night.
What do you think has been your biggest hurdle in improvement? Tactical pattern recognition?
Yor life became extremely complicated soon after kindergarten?
If either of you are interested, I wrote this blog on improvement at chess:

Basically, I think it is more about one's approach to the learning process rather than what is being learned. And understanding HOW you learn chess or anything else is the key to better learning.

kleelof, enjoyed your other thread. Just to share my experience. I started learning chess last november. I decided right away that I would forego details and focus on general principles and how they relate. So far, I've managed to keep my standard online rating above the 1200 starting point. Idiots guide to chess and the tactics trainer have helped me, that and playing against strong computers. Many chess books start with detailed analysis of positions etc. for me that is useless as I don't understand the narrative...yet. So for me the way forward remains understanding (holistic if you will).

Yeah, I had this same problem. So I did pretty much the same thing you are talking about; focus on learning the 'basics'.
I feel I am getting to the point I can go back to Reassess Your Chess or something like this.
For you, I would suggest My System by Aron Nimzowitsch . It will lay the foundation for you to begin developing solid skills. You might try playing what they call Online Chess on this site. Really gives you time to think about your moves and find better quality plans and tactics.
YOu can ask this guy: http://www.chess.com/members/view/solskytz
He played a simul with Carlsen a while back and seemed to really enjoy his game.
Who would want to play Magnus Carlson? Playing him must the most boring thing on earth.
grapes are sweeter on the other side, so they say, i think ...
Isn't it "Grapes are more wrathful on the other side."?
