To play them can be Risky-Twelve Hundreds  Often Frisky ! Points losses can be surprisingly heavy especially if second game is also lost  against skewed early points awards.Could not starters be given loading commensurate with their existing ratings in  other systems?

i agree. If an expert just started out (rating 1200) and he plays an 1600, that person's rating will drop a lot! If we just started with our USCF or FIDE rating, that would help.

One of the reasons I don't play brand new players.  Let them play a few games first so their rating reflects their ability.

You guys are wrong,  If you play a new player rated 1200 you rating will increase/decrease much less than if you play a veteran player with a rating of 1200.

The amount of games played is built into the rating formula.

The difference is negligible.  Sure - Glicko has built in RD factor, but if you're rated around 1700-1800 you'll still lose about 30 points regardless of whether the 1200 player is new or old.

Bottom line is - let those players play somebody closer to their rating first.

I like to check my oponent's recent games, and actually look over the moves to get a guage on their strength (not that mine is all that fearsome).

i fyou play a player thats new 1200, you would lose rating or win rating like if you were playing a player 1200 with 500 games. But the new players rating would win a LOT or lose A LTO the first few games

streetfighterchess84

yeah that does suck but evens it self out once you plaayed a few

if your a good player, yo ushould be able to get your rating back up. like, I resigned about 22 games, because i hadlike 50 games going on, and my rating is slowly coming back up :-)

Useful hint beginners may not know- if you wish to discontinue a new game for some  reason, for example unexpectedly finding yourself  short of time, you may be able simply to resign game without change of ratings providing too few moves have been made to affect scores of either player.. i.e. no exchanges or captures.I have found this very useful tho' it does show as a "lost"game in statistic records. This has worked for me a few times up to 2nd move made but I have not yet found the limits of no. of moves that could be made without penalties applying.
