Playing 1 ...E5 for Black Absolute Crap

Is it just me or is playing E5 to white's E4 complete and utter garbage compared to the Sicillan and other black defenses?

I play E5 and I'm always on the run with a worse position.  Playing other defenses - not so much.  YET people still play that E5 crap.  Goodness - away with it for good.

Theoretically it's as strong as any move for black that there is...possibly the strongest with the advent of defences like the Berlin.

In practice some people find it boring since it maintains symmetry but if you're getting bad positions it's probably because you're playing the rest of the opening badly not because there is anything wrong with the move.

Also stop trolling.

Mr_Tarkanian

I'm not trolling, son.  EVERY TIME I play E5 I have to worry about a ton more than I do playing other openings.  E5 is poor, in my opinion.

Playing against white who has the initiative with first move, you do NOT want to play symmetrically....but you being an incredible player already knew that.

Show us a game where you got a bad position with 1..e5 and I'll berate you and then point out which of your openings moves were the worst.

You must be the incredible player since you alone have the wisdom to realise that a move played by the strongest players throughout the entire history of chess is bad.

I find 1... e5 hard to play too, but i think it's because it leads to open games and you have to be aware of tactics (which i often fail to see) and i find myself totally cramped most of the time. But that's my fault not 1...e5.

Mr_Tarkanian

It goes back to the point that playing symmetrically when you are down a move isn't the best idea.  I detest E5 greatly.

2MOOOOROOO, I'll find a game for you to berate.  Maybe the biggest beratement would be why I played symmetrical for black in the first place.

Mr_Tarkanian

I'm at work and having difficulty putting the board up.  I can paste the FIN string, but that only shows the ending position.  I think you have to paste the PGN but its not letting me.

2mooroo

You could just post the literal pgn text here and I'll put up the board for you.

GMs and Super GMs play 1. ... e5

If e5 does not suit your playing style, play other moves. And stop also calling e5 as crap. Masters never consider e5 as crap and they know much much better about chess than you. If you are just trolling, you can call e5 anyway you like.

No, but our playing styles are different.  Plus, in general, I bet Magnus doesn't use E5 much - only to throw off prepared opponents.  I bet he plays the sicillan WAY more.

When I play 1. ... e5 against white e4, I am pretty sure I win two thirds of the time. Maybe it's that I like open games.

Ubik42

Kramnik and Aronian play 1...e5. These are also some pretty good players.
