You are better than Carlsen now?

No, but our playing styles are different.  Plus, in general, I bet Magnus doesn't use E5 much - only to throw off prepared opponents.  I bet he plays the sicillan WAY more.

The majority of top players (including Carlsen) use 1...e5 as their main defence against 1. e4 nowadays.  The Sicilian is a little less popular at the top level over the last few years.

If you pull up Magnus's games, he overwhelmingly plays other black openings more than E5.  Were you speculating?

Are you?

I checked out Magnus' repertoire on the chessgames.com database.  Over his entire career he has played the Sicilian 162 times compared to 1...e5 152 times so it's basically even, however I would be willing to bet that most of those Sicilians are earlier in his career since he plays 1...e5 much more nowadays.

I switched from the Sicilian to the Open game.  It's just easier to play imo.  I still play both though.

rooperi

He said nowadays. It's certainly true over the past 2 years or so he prefers e5.

actually he even said that everything but 1... e5 and 1... c5 is "suboptimal" against 1. e4

This is a true statement it just has now practical significance for everyone except the top 20 or so players in the world.

Is it just me or is playing E5 to white's E4 complete and utter garbage compared to the Sicillan and other black defenses?

I play E5 and I'm always on the run with a worse position.  Playing other defenses - not so much.  YET people still play that E5 crap.  Goodness - away with it for good.

lolz! Keep saying it....You will love it more! Cool

So the more I hate it, the more I will love it?  Sounds like broccoli and me as a young child.

I don't think the opening is really the problem but ending up in positions that seem to be horrible even though you didn't do anything obviously wrong. I have this problem with semi-open games a lot more than open ones though. Sicilians confuse me on both sides of the board. This happens most when I miss a critical point where I can gain tactical chances.

Anyway I guess you are frustrated about your last game in which you got rid of all White's pawns but then he decided to just throw pieces to the kingside and hack away. This can be easy to do with 1.e4 e5. :) But sometimes Black can do it too! I only looked at one position I was interested in.

White just played 12.d4 and you played 12...ed but I'm not really sure about this. White's advantages are that he has 2 knights in a closed position and play against the weak light squares on your kingside especially since your light-squared bishop is on b7. A key white square in the Ruy Lopez and most kp openings is f5 and 12...ed seems to help White get a knight there. Once that knight moves the 'bad' knight on d2 gets new options and so the 'bad' bishop on c1 will too. It seems to just let all of White's pieces into the game.

Black has the two bishops, one of which is staring at the White kingside. White has no answer to this piece so it needs to get in the game. The knight on d7 isn't doing much and I don't know what to do with the bishop on e7 either. The rook on a8 is protecting the a-pawn and the rook on f8 is doing nothing. But ok bishops like open positions so I thought the center should be opened. So I looked at 12...f5 which is probably bad. Idunno... But it opens the bishop on b7, gives the rook on f8 something to do and opens the position.  The downside is that the pawns will be very, very bad. But who cares we got two bishops!

Looking out for these sometimes dubious ideas helped me a lot in positions in which it looked like my opponent was going to run me over or grind me out. I had a similar problem in one of my games:

If anything I think losses with 1...e5 can be a lot easier to learn from than other positions.

I've been checking Mandy's theory and I think it's time we admit he's right. 1...e5 is crap. So is 1.e4, 1.d4 1.c4 1.Nf3 and every black response -- crap, crap, crap. In fact I've checked every single opening move against Houdini and they are all crap. No matter whether I take Black or White no matter what opening move I play I always end up with a terrible position and lose the game.   In a few cases I've set up positions where it seemed like I was certainly winning... but eventually it turns out the position was crap and I lose. QED Chess is broken. All moves are crap. Sorry but facts are facts.

If you want to use Houdini to test which opening is crap, play it against another top engine like Stockfish. When Houdini plays against human, 1. f3 wins by force!
