@ponz111: I don't really agree with that rule...but oh well.

A steady but daring attitude. Go for win if sac. presents itself. Not local scubs....sure, but also beatable. The idea "if i get a point, point and half" i'm happy. B.S. use this as opportunity. U play well and i support your effort.....your a winner, play like it.

I'd be elated just to be sitting across from an IM or GM in an over the board game!Smile

chessisgood, how did it go?

The tournament is October 24th-28th if I'm remember the right tournament information.

When I was a low expert but living in a part of Illinois without the top chess players I finally got to play in a large tournament in Chicago with  some masters and a senior master or two and a gm and did ok.  Just gotta play for a win and not be afraid. I even played a two pawn sac gambit vs the 1 gm I played.

Of course that was 40 years ago--when I had a brain...

You can beat two levels above you. If you are a class C player you can beat a class A player sometimes. If you are an expert you can beat a GM sometimes.

Although I think it is easier for a "C" to beat an "A" than an expert to beat a gm?

The higher the ratings get the harder it becomes to gain rating points so while a C class player may certainly beat someone 2 classes ( 400 rating points ) higher the chances of a 2200 beating a 2600 is not the same at all . The 2200 has much less chance of beating someone 400 points higher than does any class player .

Ugh, more people at my level who have beaten 2200+ players . Sometimes I feel like I'm the only 1900 who hasn't beaten or even drawn one hehe.

You still do better against higher rated players than I did. My peak OTB was ECF 158 (FIDE conversion 1914), and yet the highest rated player I beat in a competitive game was only 165! I Could frequently draw against better players, but hardly ever beat them.

sounds like a very cool tournament!  i've beaten a few titleds, but only in online simuls - not one on one.  there is some sound advice here.  good luck!

Hi reb, of course there are exceptions to every rule as my score is 3-0 vs people who are grandmasters.

Avatar of AndyClifton

Yes, but were they GMs when you played them, ponz?  That's what counts.

Avatar of ponz111

Two were very close to being grandmasters [approximatley within 100 rating points] and one was already a grandmaster.

By the way the one who was already a grandmaster beat the world champ once--world champ when that person was the world champ.

So--lowly expert beats a grandmaster who had beat the world champ.

But as I said that was when I had a brain...

Also, I once played a tandem game where my partner is now a grandmaster.  I think tandem game exhibitions or play would be great for chess.com?

Tandem games would be pretty funny. Of course you could do it already, by sharing an account, or by having a 2-person vote chess game. But neither is a strict tandem game.

Avatar of ponz111

We all used some kind of server to make our moves and we did not consult with each other at all.  Actually I am not sure how it workded but did not share a 2 person account.  The game was posted on a website for all who wanted to see.

I think if 4 of our chess.com players --top players--agreed to do a tandem--it would be fun to watch.

lol...then it sounds to me like you played one GM. Laughing

Wow, I haven't played any of those guys (and the only ones I played on Shadowknight's list were Formanek and Fuentes).

The 17th entry just withdrew, so it's back to the original list.

Avatar of ponz111

It  turns out some of my friends became correspondence grandmasters.

I only played 1 gm at the time he was a gm but I played 2 who were very close and now are gms. My record vs masters is better than my record vs experts.  [I think when you play strong players you tend to try harder? This is true for me--is it true for other players?]

Just wondering, what will it take for me to get a FIDE rating?

I think you have to play a minimum of three FIDE rated players and have a score of greater than one if I recall what someone else said correctly. Good chance you'll probably have a FIDE rating after this.
