Well, after a quick look at your profile, I'd say you just need more practice. In the 1st 2 pages of your games I think I saw only 2 games you played Black? I'd suggest you try play your next 100 as Black, and learn some openings

Well, your rating is not a reflection of your strength if you only ever play white... Anyway, there are some really fun offbeat lines for Black.

It's tough to play black as a "beginner" Find out wich openings you hate the most.

-Then try to find a defence that you can feel comfertable with.

I used to hate playing against 1.d4 and against the Sicilian when I played 1.e4

-To day I prefer the Queens Indian setup aginst 1.d4, and I've played the Sicilian myself alot, so I know how to handle it wiht white. (not know as I'm good against it, just like against other openings)

-Openings is a matter of taste, find out what you like, then it's easyer to chose your openings!

sicilian is the most natural system yo can play as black. it leads ot very smooth lines of play, provides quick developmetna while not sacrificing counterattack and defence.

Sicilian is not natual at all! It does not give room for quick development! In most lines black build up the position very slowly!

In the long vs short rokade lines, black really need to know his "book" or he is in for an assult!

If it's a new problem, take a look at your old games with black Cool

One of the most important things to remember is that, as black, you're at a disadvantage, especially in the opening; so there's no need to force or rush anything. Try and react logically to what white is doing (they slip up eventually!) rather than immediately trying to force the game.

Also, I think that you should just bite the bullet and play more games as black. You're rating will suffer in the short term, but it will get better. Other than that, read books, use tactics pages, and just generally improve your knowledge.

Best of luck.

I used to worry about playing black when I didn't know much about openings, but as I've studied them more and more I realise how varied and interesting the black responses can be.

When you play black you are normally the one to decide the opening. If someone plays e4 you can reply with e5, e6, d5, d6, c5 or c6 (possible Ruy Lopez, French, Scandinavian, Pirc, Sicilian or Caro-Kann) to name just a few distinct openings. Each has its own flavour, set of plans and typical tactics. The same is true of replying to d4 - you can call the shots as black - white tends to decide on the variation, but black generally decides the opening.

My advice would be to play through a few games with different openings, decide which one you want to investigate further and then learn the general principles of that opening. It'll become a good friend as you gradually get to know it better.

Don't mind the rating, it is not important. If you haven't, learn basic principles of opening play, and practice playing as black.

You could try some "new" wild openings (if you like to take the iniative with white, you probably like it with black too)

Gambits are fun with black!

Don't worry about ratings.  Just concentrate on your game.

push comes to shove, play unrated til you're comfortable with whatever you're studying with black.

Against 1.e4 maybe you could try the Caro Kann and the Nimzoindian defence against 1.d4. Of course as already stated earliere in this thread you have to put a little effort in getting to know the basics principles of the openings.

Tommy, from the 1970's on, I would play OTB 5-game tournaments and go 2-1 or 3-0 as White and 0-2, 0-3, or 1-2 as Black.

I finally realized I was obeying the caution of not trying to attack too soon as Black, but I was being TOO cautious. You HAVE to make threatening moves even if they have some defensive aspect, otherwise you'll give up space or tempos too easily.

Now, if I play a game as Black and end up struggling into the Middlegame because my pieces are too jammed together or I allowed White to control a key square on my side of the board, I do a lot of post-game study to try to see where I could have been more aggressive before I reached a tough position. A few months ago I posted this game, which I won but was really tough, asking what I could have done earlier in the game:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/won-but-where-could-i-attack-sooner

It was a Caro-Kann Defense, Advance Variation, and the best advice was that I should have played ...c5 sooner. I learned from that.  In a game I just finished, where I played the Caro-Kann Advance against a player rated 200 points higher than me, I did play ...c5 sooner, even though I thought it was a little reckless: I knew I couldn't just sit back and wait to be attacked:
