When a human being play chess for money (prize) against another human being do you consider that is gambling ? I don't think so.Games of chance you meet in Casinos only, which are restricted in some countries or towns.

Kasparov or Anand play for money with software .I don't think so.

I am not confusing anything. Ofcourse it is gambling. Two people placing any amount of money (say £100 for example) on any event are gambling. That could be on a coin toss, boxing match, chess, flipping beer mats, poker...literally anything. Betting money on the outcome of an event is gambling.

Ok .I see you make a huge confusion between game chances and games based on skills.I ask you something else. The Bible forbids games like footbal or chess ? No.Bible forbids games like poker, blackjack, etc.which for the most part are based on luck. The games FROM THE CASINOS,where everybody can gambling.

Discussing religion breaks forum rules.

And you want to shut my mouth ?:))) No more argumets?

I just want to point out that a moderator might lock the thread if you start talking religion. Smile

Besides that, I just wanted to make clear that computer supported chess is not gambling, but on the contrary requires (especially at high levels) deep strategical understanding. You may believe that or not.

I'm not going to argue if gambling is ethical or not, because I have seen discussions like that - and have you seen one, you have seen them all.

Which verse says "thou shall not play poker"? From what I know it forbids gambling including in chess games where you use your skill. So in the first place, what you did is morally incorrect based on your own ideals.

"Lastly, using the religion angle to support personal values is straight up blasphemous.  I'm not even a believer, and I recognize this as so.  Not only that, he uses it to cover the fact he doesn't even understand simple ideas like chance."

Here Idon't like when you start with insults. Why you try to say to me I am stupid. You know me?

How you know you are right? You even answer me my last reply.Everybody when has no arguments start blaming .First wait to answer your oponnet and after say something.

And the absolut truth, who knows? Einstein said everything is relative.

I posted here this comment not to offend us but to have a civilized discussion .If youexhausted the arguments is your problem.Bringing an argument from the Bible that does not mean I am unwise or ignorant, on the contrary is I assume that I have something culture. Then argued  rating system that you have mentioned i seeyou not answered me yet.

I don't need to know you to know that you're wrong.  If the truth is insulting, that's your problem.  The truth is, the rating system can be used to assess probability that the lower rated player wins.  If there is no guaranteed chance of winning, placing a bet on something expecting to come out on top is a chance outcome.    Unless you are guaranteed an outcome, you're dealing with chance.  Your only argument is if I disagree with you, I somehow disagree with God.  Seriously, get over yourself.

Stop trolling with religion and controversy.  I am done with you here.

I prefer to play against humans, so I would simply not sign up to play against chess engines. I do not see why it is an issue that those who prefer playing with the aid of chess engines have a website where they can do that.

I wrote this:

"Let's say you have a good computer processor and Ram and avery good engine, maybe Houdini ,the best one,and you hope your opponent has a weaker processor. What that s mean ? Mean that you gambling ."

No,carefully read all comments.I said when chess is professional job for  you, then can play for money with your brain, not with robot. And if you play poker for money with your brain is also  professional. But I don't judge you for this ,Somebody else, judge you.Not me I made this rule, but learned men of ancient times. Maybe because is gambling.:)

I think is a shame a website allows its member to use software to play chess.....I dont see the point ....Chess is a minds game and should be enjoyable.

Gambling with an engine or your own brain is irrelevant. In the book you base your own ideals on and referenced, gambling in any way, shape, or form is still considered gambling and is immoral. Hence, you can only conclude that your own God punished you for your deed by taking away your money.

I'm sure there are lots of things that you or I don't find enjoyable that others do, and I agree that it is a pointless exercise, but I don't see why it's wrong or a shame to provide a platform for people who wish to do that to be able to.

There are computer vs computer world championships. Not interesting to me, but some people obviously really care about it. Why not let them have their website. Even to gamble if they want. They aren't harming anyone.

As long as it is made clear that engines are being used and that money is on the line then I don't see what damage they are doing. Apart from to the OPs feelings of course.

Annabella1

hmmmm   Ok.....I will agree with you.....as long as they are being CLEAR...yes....I do have issues when they don't  ....that is all...I know there are all kinds of tastes and colors in this planet :)

I'm sure that technology is going to influence the way chess will be played in the future. It will be about creativity, intuition, beating the opponent by coming up with moves that an engine does not feel Cool

Alright, I'll entertain you for one more post.  A better mark of a dictator is believing one's values to represent that of a God.  Chicken?  Hardly.  I will however report you if you keep this up, Mr never-played-a-game-here-looking-only-to-argue-nonsense-account.  Truth is you're an idiot who put money into a gambling sight you f'n hypocrite, and you lost money because you didn't read it was a computer assisted chess site.  Now you're bitching that gambling is unethical and using religion to somehow justify your losses.  If you spent more time reading, you wouldn't quote me, when within the paragraph you quoted, it tells you how chess can be used as an instrument of gambling since the outcomes aren't guaranteed.  I also suspect if you spent more time reading, you wouldn't be shocked that you put money in a computer assisted chess site.  You sure you want to keep fishing for replies troll?
