I have two data points for you.  I played two games just now, the first while high

and the second while I was REALLY high

I'd say it's inconclusive.

There is a pitcher in baseball that pitched a perfect game high on acid.. in the 1970s played for the pirates

I played chess on acid before, until I couldn't any longer. I remember it being really cool and really difficult and then I don't know what happened

dude i played chess on acid once and it was the best chess experience of my life, i stomped like 4 people in a row and i felt like i could see multiple possible futures of the game at once. i thought that something "clicked" in my head and i just got way better all at once, but as soon as the acid wore off, so did my chess prowess. :/

This is almost exactly what happened to me.  The pieces just sort of knew where to go and I was beating all comers.  The next time I tried it, I forgot that knights could capture pieces.

Dock Ellis pitched a perfect game high on acid. there's a documentary about it

Cool

There should be a kaynight comment generator, no need to actually spend time to write the one-liners when a machine throwing random words could do the same (or better).

I picture you saying "useful". Endless laughter, at least once!

As far as cannabis goes, it may be possible that the ruminative thought processes generated by activation of the anandamide receptors may counterbalance the short term memory loss factors in the ability to play chess.

As for the more powerful psychedelics in higher doses, the loss of ego-identity could theoretically reduce the "will to win", as the player's perception of "self" merges with that of the "opponent".

Bonny-Rotten

nice to see someone write up a really well thought out post.

If Misha could find his brilliant sacrifices and combinations drunk all the time, I don't think there's a reason why you wouldn't be able to play well a little high. I obviously wouldn't get absolutely faded and tired and then expect to play a decent game though.

Playing while innebriated is never a good idea unless the other guy is too.  Then it could be fun, though I've only ever played while drinking; hilarious fun.  With weed, I think I'd probably get sick of playing before the game was over.

As far as performance though, forget about it.

I play my best chess after I prepare by smoking some banana peels, then huffing a good snort of cat piss.
