Playing Chess on an iPad!

*Note* I've been playing chess all this time (about 2 years) on my iPad Air. When I went to play using the mouse my hand would shake so badly I could NOT control the movement of mouse or pieces...bullet/Blitz games.  Now, I'm just starting to be able to play with a mouse. So, I guess I'm saying, DON'T get hook on playing chess on an iPad. Your game will suffer big time!! Just my 2 cents. I also was not able to enter any tournaments on the iPad. So, Time to put many more hours into using a mouse! Thanks.

Judging by your avatar, you are a dog, dogs dont have opposable thumbs, so that may be why your mouse slips on the I-Pad air?

Then, my avator is a car.....

I don't use the Chess.com application, as the regular web site works fine. So I'm not sure why you can't enter tournaments.

AppleTim

Hi. Could you please tell me how you do enter tournaments on the iPad? I thought you had to use the app? Thanks for any advice.

I use Android devices, phone and tablet. I don't use any mouse, only touch. I know I could use a computer, but why sit in front of a computer when I can lie comfortably on a settee?

AppleTim

Thank you. I was doing that as well, but I was told to enter tournaments, I would have to use my desktop or Macbook. I was told by a Chess.com staff member they are working on this. Long games are fine on the iPad, but bullet and blitz "tournaments" would kill my time trying to log on...then play in tournaments. This is what I was told, so if anyone plays in tournaments on the iPad or iPhone, please tell me how well it works for you. This mouse stuff on my desktop is killing me as far as coordination and speed! LOL! It's getting better now that I'm working on it. Two years on the ipad was fun, but now I want to try tournaments. Thank you all.

I don't know if you can enter tournaments using the app, but you cannot play through the website on an iPad since it uses Java.

But - you can use the website to enter tournaments and then play all the games in the app. That's what I do... the iPad app is pretty good.

edit: oh, if you mean live tournaments I might be wrong, sorry.

AppleTim

Hi JD,

Can you take me though this...I seem to be a bit slow with.. "you can use the website to enter tournaments and then play all the games in the app. That's what I do"

Thank you for your reply.

MisterBoy

If you're talking about live chess I think I spoke incorrectly, I ws thinking of online/correspondance tournaments.

Is it true that playing blitz on a mobile device, you lose more time? I was playing the other day on a 1min game and even though I was literally moving instantly I ran out of time after about 30 moves and lost, the other guy had 20-30s remaining :(

AppleTim

Thank you! That's what I was told might happen in blitz.

Yes, I'll wait till they do another update to the Chess.com app. I do like to move around the house and play longer games on the iPad.

Thank you again. Take care.

I love playing chess on my iPad (fourth-generation)!!!

I usually play 10 minute games (10 minutes on each side) without any trouble.

I am now thinking about upgrading when the next new iPad Air comes out. I need more storage (128GB) because I download my favorite chess magazine "New-In-Chess", and of course more speed is always nice...🐾

AppleTim

Hi iMac Chess,

I have the iPad Air 2 now with 128GBs. I love it! I like your handle, lol! :) I'll check out the magazine as well. It's great to play on, but playing on my iMac is much harder now after 2 years on the iPad. Take care.

iMacChess

@AppleTim🇺🇸

I ordered my magazine by using the "New-In-Chess" app. It's the best Chess magazine in the world. I use to use both my iMac and my iPad but now I use my iPad only a play chess on. I use my iMac when I want to do things on the chess.com webpage. If the Internet is down, I use my iPhone 6 Plus to play chess on. As you can see I'm Apple all the way...🐾

I have played 1000 games on ipad

I use a mouse when I need control. The iPad is simply not responsive enough for one minute chess, especially when using premove. I also lack opposable thumbs, but I'm an old dog who remembers the first mice.

AppleTim

That's what I'm working on now...control of the mouse after two years on the iPad. Old dogs are great. :) Thank you all for your comments.

AppleTim

I'm happy to report that after a few short weeks off the iPad, I now have control of the mouse! No more shaky hand with the mouse. I've put in a lot of games with the computers here on Chess.com trying to get my hand and eye coordination back. As I said earlier, I was worried about my hand shaking so much when I was trying to play bullet or blitz! It's amazing how quickly my mind and muscle control came back at my age, LOL! Life is good. I even beat  Computer EASY1 at bullet chess a hand full of times. Now, don't ask me how many times it beat me, lol.  Take care.

Ziryab

Congratulations. I'm better with the mouse because the vast majority (probably 80%) of my 100,000+ online game have been played that way. When I was a young pup (40ish), I played a few one minute games of 80+ moves on the touch-pad of my laptop. Age has eliminated that skill.

I am getting better with the iPad, and even beat an old friend in a one minute game with it two weeks ago.
