Playing for the Draw

Alot of times after making a serious blunder you realize your probably not going to win the game.  In this situation many times i just resign and take a loss. I was wondering, the usual chess theory is geared toward the win and mating the opposing king. Is their any strategy to play for the draw when you know you have very little chance of a win. A draw looks much better on the record and is a has a much better impact on the rating. Not everyone has a strong endgame, anyone here specialize in setting up a draw?

well im not the best at setting up a draw but the way i try it is where you purposely watch the other players moves and then you try to put yourself in a position where you cant move at all forcing stalemate, moslty yeah thats the best way to do it, other then that you can ask for a draw but they barely happens to be a acceptance!

Well yeah next game you try,  try that take time and think where would be the next best move for me to go to see if i can ake a force stalemate!

k  see ya

i agree kind of with avengier trying to force a stalemate is good WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE YOUR KING LEFT! my way of a draw when you have other pieces is try to block off and close places and pieces and if you have a small opening that doesnt hurt you at all leave it there, alot of the time repitition will be the outcome of those kinds of positions. now im not totally clear on the facts of a draw with more than just kings on the board, but i have a good idea of where to start! good luck with your games!

Perpetual check is my most common way of forcing a draw.  It's much easier to set up than a forced stalemate.

It's impossible to force a stalemate when you only have a King left.

It is never definite that you are not able to win the game until your king dies... Your opponent can make a mistake, can be over-confident, can overlook something or can even press the wrong button...!  So, the first step to try & at least get a draw is NOT to resign before the game is REALLY lost!!!  I never do & I hate it when my opponents do it!!!
