Playing the chess.com computer

Hello all. I joined chess.com a few weeks ago, after having been out of the game since the early 70's. Since joining chess.com, I have been playing against the chess.com computer. I have been setting my level at 800 each and every game. Every game that I have played, the computer has beaten me like a drum. Thats fine and what I would expect. My question is - can you ever beat it? I don't mind loosing every time, but I am wondering if it will ever tell me that " I don't suck as bad as I did a few months ago" or something similar. I want to improve and get better, but at this point the computer may see me as a total moron. How can I know if I am progressing in my moves. Just pondering?  Ross

Have you considered playing live chess against a human opponent on this site?  That will give you a rating and you will be able to use that to gage improvement.  As far as the computer goes, at the 800 setting it will intentionally hang several pieces during the game.  If you focus on keeping your pieces safe and watch for the computers mistakes you should be able to beat it.  I struggle with the 1600 level but have not lost to the 1200 level in quite ahwile, so you can beat it.

I just played a game on the 800 level and it hung a bishop on the 4th move.  So watch for that kind of stuff

800 is the lowest setting, right?

Its funny that as soon as I posted this last night, I decided to play one more game before going to bed and guess what happened. You're right - I won!! So, now I think I'm not a total moron, but maybe a semi-total! Ross
