Playing Traditional Chess Openings

Hi chess.com members

I feel in the 3 digits range, playing traditional is a very bad thing, for instance, playing e5 vs e4,playing into the italian, or playing d5 vs d4 I think you understand what I mean. I need some more off-beat openings to play, for e4 and d4, any suggestions?

There are two black gambits you can try.For 1.e4,there is the Latvian Gambit, which looks like a black version of the Kings Gambit;for 1.d4,there is the Albin Counter-Gambit.They both are legitimate gambits ( even if barely so).Be forewarned, you will either win big ,or go down in flames like the Hindenburg.

The Queen's Gambit is very effective at the lower levels. Maybe try learning the French Defense or Silican Defense for e4.

Just for this comment, play the Ruy Lopez as white, the Najdorf Sicilian as black, and the Nimzo-Indian against d4 as black. There’s a reason everyone plays traditional lines: it’s the best thing to do! I don’t care if your opponent knows what to do against your line, because you’re gonna be fine if you play traditionally. Meanwhile, if your opponent knows what they’re doing in a sideline, you’re gonna get a bad position most of the time because sidelines are sidelines for a reason- you can’t play hope chess and expect good results.

Play 1. e4 e5...don't be a timid soul and play that half-open ssssstuff like the sickcilian or the baguette defense...those are for players afraid of...everything.

Ilampozhil25

just play something you like

theres actually no reason why 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5 as black are bad

i literally do that lol

also i play into the italian

Yes, notably Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, and countless other grandmasters almost twice your rating.

ok actually chill on that recommendation @thesampson

they should play something simple like the kings indian or scotch at a beginner level

That’s true but they need to learn that mainlines aren’t bad

I recommend you play and learn those exact openings, actually.

e5 against e4

d5 against d4

This is how all beginning players should first learn openings, IMO - because these tend to result in very instructive, principled moves.
