Can you get good at chess by playing with yourself, or is it better to have an engine or human player?

I would suggest that you 'play yourself', rather than play WITH yourself. That way, you can avoid any unfortunate misunderstandings. You could of course do both at the same time, although I imagine it would be difficult to concentrate properly on either activity...
