Batgirl,

Could you or someone elaborate on the "Fair Play" policy and in particular the use of opening databases for evaluating moves made?

https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/articles/1444879

I understand that using engines to determine your moves is NOT permitted, but what actually is?

In the old days correspondence players used their "library" and with computer analysis now, it is quite simple to run a line of variations to determine whether you will be better making a particular move.  I don't consider this fair play, but it certainly happens quite often.

So what can you use a database for that isn't considered fair?  Thanks for sharing your opinions.

What are the rules?

  • No chess programs or engines (e.g. Chessmaster, Fritz, Komodo, Houdini, Stockfish, Chessbase with any active UCI engine, etc.) can be used to analyze positions in ongoing games at any time.
  • In Daily Chess (turn-based games with several days per move), you may consult books or databases (including the Chess.com Explorer) for opening moves. "Tablebases" - which are specialized databases of particular endgame positions - may NOT be used at any time. Further, you may not consult an engine to provide an opinion on your opening database, self-preparation or analysis that would relate to a particular game-in-progress on Chess.com.
  • In Live Chess, no outside assistance OF ANY KIND is permitted.
  • Fixing game results by playing with multiple accounts or losing intentionally is also against the rules.

My opinion is pretty irrelevant.  The rules are that in Live Chess, no assistance at all is allowed.  Turn-based chess is treated similarly  to correspondence chess, allowing to opening books, annotated games, databases other than endgame tablebases, but no computer or human assistance.  Since both sides have the same rules and options, I don't see 'fairness' as an issue.  If someone wants to play with both sides using no otherwise allowable aides, then he would simply have to obtain that agreement with his opponent.   That might even be a good premise for a group/club here.

Thanks BG.  And of course you are relevant as always.  Even though the options are available in turn based games, I've always thought it unfair that someone may have a bigger "library" or in the case of databases, game accumulations to find the best move instead of making one suo marte.  One can never know unless you are across the board from your opponent it seems.

It's cool that they are addressing the concerns of so many players, but in my years on this site I do not believe anyone used a computer on me--though I have been accused of being one at times!  Is there any notice for people under investigation, or a penalty for someone who makes continuous false claims against a player/players?  Thanks, BG.

I don't play turn-based chess much but I've never suspected anyone of cheating either.  I'm sure some do, hence the need for the info in the link.   As far as notification for accused abusers/cheaters/whatever,, I have no idea. Generally people are warned before anyone takes any action but not always.  I imagine if someone becomes a nuisance by reporting a lot of people without sufficient cause, that person would be put on some persona non grata list.

I only play 5 minute games online, and then only after much liquid and herbal imbibing, so to be accused of using a computer (!)--when I get done laughing, I wonder just how weak their computers are to be that confused.  But I was just curious about the nuisance reporting--thanks, BG.
