Covid boredom, the queens gambit
1) I started playing chess almost a year ago on 14th December 2020 when I was almost 20 years old | 2) Moment I played my first game | 3) Daily one rapid game is minimum and my usual dose xd There were days ofcourse with more games played and hours spent, but lately I reduced it to only one game | 4) Yes I do, I watch 3 youtubers and current WC match. Nothing from TV except show Queens Gambit that made me play this game, I watched it before I knew anything about chess and never again since then | 5) Due to COVID and huge popularity of new show. Lots of people came back to playing chess after a long pause and even more people decided to give it a try. In most cases it was worth playing so people stuck around. Also it boosted so much chess content and I think hype is still present

2) Right around when I started. I was grinding to crack 1000 for a while haha
3) Everyday
4) I like YouTube. Started with more educational lecture type stuff through Ben Finegold, but now do mostly entertainment w/ Chessbrah and Eric Rosen (only the YouTube recaps, I won't use Twitch), or to stay on top of current games/watch older greats do Agadmator.
5) Pretty much consensus stuff-- QG and matching established streamers w/ chess
I would not say chess has become popular recently. It has gradually enjoyed greater participation with the internet at the expense of over the board play.
I'm 60 years old. As a teenager here in England chess profited from the Fischer versus Spassky boom following their 1972 match; coverage possibly given by the media as the contest served as a proxy for the Cold War.
In my own area, the Birmingham and District League grew from eight to ten divisions. Now it has contracted to six. All this of course before the current scamdemic. People have moved away from over the board games towards video games etc So, in so far has chess has enjoyed any online success, it is often in this impersonal throwaway video sense. It must be mentioned that sporting conduct over the board is the rule and the worst kind of trolling is only experienced online, although rarer than people usely believe.
I can't speak for other countries but my local library once had a substantial chess section. The modern age has seen a greater dissemination of chess information making it possible for people of poorer incomes to become acquainted with chess ideas; yet young people with affluent and education orientated parents will benefit from their patronage in chess, as in other pursuits. And I always maintain that (chess) excellence is not only a measure of the individual's talents, but a measure of the support of family, friends, community, and the wider society.
birminghams central library , top floor was a chess mecca ziggy , i hope it still is , i played for sutton coldfield in the past , the birmingham chess fed is a really good fed

Yes, it was good, but so was my local town library of Smethwick. They even had a reserve stock you could send the staff down the basement to get for you.

1)When did you start playing chess?
My father taught me 50 years ago.
2)When did you really start getting into chess? And why?
When I won the school chess competition two years in a row at the ages of 12 and 13. I've only played for enjoyment since then, and am not particularly good. I like quick games and tend to play quite aggressively, and lack the patience and application to become more than a decent intermediate player.
3)How often do you play chess?
Every day against the computer. Either at very low levels where I'm seeing how quickly I can beat it without errors/blunders, or at higher levels where I'm actually challenging myself. Occasionally against friends in real life.
4)Do you watch any chess media? I.e. professional tournaments, youtubers, tv shows, etc
No.
5)How do you think chess has become so popular recently?
Internet.
Hi, I’m writing a paper on the discourse community of chess and I am trying to inquire about how chess has recently become so popular. If you could please answer the following questions I would greatly appreciate it.

3)How often do you play chess?
