Dark Ritual is an interrupt...just saying ;).
Poker Chess Magic The Gathering Baccarat

As a cycle of 1 mana spells having effect of 3: healing salve prevents damage, lightning bolt does that much damage, giant growth boosts a creatures toughness and power by that much, dark ritual gives that much black mana and ancestral recall gives that many cards. Most inequal cycle ever.
It is easy to be that harsh afterwards. Also being perfectly equal was probably not one of the design goals, but to create a magic "atmosphere" and a game "spirit". In which contect healing salve works great. The new cards are pretty much void of spirit, just lots of strange game mechanics.
It took a few years for the whole concept of card economy to be invented. The necropotence decks that came with Ice Age were considered creative -- life is worth less than cards!? One can not expect that Garfield would have foreseen everything :-)

To a large degree, I agree! While I accept the achievement of basically inventing a new genre of gaming, which did sound strange at first, I still find the design of power levels early on as funny. An angel, a vampire, a djinn and some of the most frighteningly good lands, artifacts and blue spells ever seen.
As to new cards being devoid of spirit, not so sure. People screamed that eldrazi "ruined the game", same for infect. I thought wow nice use of design space. The guilds in original ravnica block were amazing linkups of our favourite colour combinations, as was the alara block. Invasion block for years was my delight - 3 sets full of beauty and marvels. There were dark years - mirrodin was important in ways (equips!) but so dull in others. Ravnica seemed nice, giving us flavour which sparked into our world the way the three kingdoms stuff had done. The undead realms of Innistrad....there is plenty of flavour and spirit in later sets. Even the core sets which traditionally have been for flicking your eyes over then ignoring, since they were for new players primarily, have recently given us some joys like Titans and M15 is great. Revisiting the colour pairings or wedges in blocks 7 years later is also brilliant - to build on earlier stuff in logical and appealling ways. Who even would have thought that cards with 5 hybrid mana symbols would suddenly be much better with the devotion mechanic?
Formats have widened considerably - kaleidoscope, momir basic (player invented), commander (player led and controlled for legality again). The card types of planeswalkers and bestow enchants? Awesome.
Garfield sure made the foundation but his dream has gone nova. Please dont say it is in any way void of spirit now. Its not chess but hell, I love it.

The current chess set has been type 2 for 500 years now.
Most Magic sets cannot stay in rotation more than two years.
Now ask yourself which one is trying to scam you?

The natures of the games are different of course. Mtg opening theory being dictated by card rules and decklists whereas chess opening theory by the insanely complicated developments over decades by people so far beyond us (well me for sure) applying themselves to neurotic levels of concentration. Type 2 is to allow new players a relatively easy card pool to learn. I play standard only casually with occasional player run tourney. My hardcore decks are all vintage, modern, commander - these are eternal formats which only get affected slightly by new cards. I can keep a deck on mtg for a long time with little thought to adjustment, except for sideboards. How much of the Sicilian theory I learned 20 years ago is still solid?

if you play standard outside of high level play, you are just a casual scrub.
play legacy or vintage like a real person, or play modern if you like making nerds cry.
vintage: dredge/tps legacy: RUG delver/esper stone blade modern: pod/tron/bg rock

Hahah. I play online so sometimes will throw something together for std for a laugh but not often. Mostly, as I say, its the eternal formats. With power 9 now online, vintage is a total scream.

Type 2 is to force you to spend your money buying new cards, over and over again.
I had one friend, maxed out two credit cards, just trying to stay competitive in MTG.
WotC is the very embodiment of greed.

Then either the credit cards had very low limits or he was not selling well with stuff he didn't need. Top players pool in teams for resources. Idiots will spend too much - anything in life costs money and people will spend beyond their means more often than not. I know people who have built trading empires online from the base $10 investment and traded well. Wotc does give free stuff like the free phantom sealeds recently for M15 which gave actual product as a special thing, every account got a free sealed deck tourney and kept cards and boosters won.

Of course they did.
That is to hook more players, so they will spend more later.
I figured out their game. Which is why I abandoned MTG early.

You figured out that a business wants to make money, good job! You entirely missed the point about eternal formats not being the same as type 2. Oh well.

you forgot shogi. chess.com should have shogi and xangi live options as well as western chess. some of the rules of shogi should also be adopted in western chess. like perpetual check being illegal and if you do cause a 3 fold repetition via perpetual check you lose as opposed to it being a draw. the variety of pieces is superior too. instead of a queen it has a silver general, a gold general, a lance, a dragon king and a dragon horse.

Dude, we need the queen to sex things up.
Well look at the cards in my profile. The 1st series of 1 drop instants that corresponds to their colors...
