Poor Olympiad for top players

This Olympiad has been a great success for young players, India and Uzebekistan in particular, of course. At the same time, the established players had a pretty rough time.

Look at the rating gains and (mostly) losses of the 12 highest rated players (before the Olympiad, that is):

 1  Carlsen            - 3.0
 2  Caruana           -18.3
 3  Aronian           -16.4
 4  So                    - 2.0
 5  Giri                  + 4.3
 6  Mamedyarov   - 0.5
 7  Dominguez     - 9.4
 8  Duda               - 9.1
 9  Harikrishna     - 3.8
10  Shankland      - 7.5
11  Vidit               - 3.7
12  Wojtaszek      -14.8

Wow! The only player with a (small) gain is Anish Giri. All other players lost, some rather big.

Also noteworthy is that none of these players played in a team from the top three.

In fact, neither Uzbekistan, Armenia or India 2 had *any* 2700+ player in their team.

Who would have predicted that?

Fascinating numbers. The much vaunted USA team all lost rating points.  Who would have predicted that!?. I guess these events are very different for the top players than the usual run of 'elite' tournaments.

wow I knew that there were big losses but I did not expect Giri to be the only one to gain rating

Sam Shankland could have both saved much of his rating loss, as well as offered the USA a chance to win the thing by doing nothing more than not picking pieces up like he's playing otb bullet.
