Go to the fridge and get a beer, by the time you get back they will have timed out.
Poor sportsmanship
When I went back to the game I saw that I had a loss recorded for ME abandoning the game. Mate was forced is one and I had waited 6 minutes with no move made. I did not abandon the game. What can I do about this? I am mad as hell and wany revenge. I lost points and was given a loss.
What does this reply mean? I just want to know how I get my loss changed to a victory since this is in no way fair. It is an unjustice! Earthquakes do not change this fact.
Thanks. I think the reply suggesting that the current world tragedy's have anything to do with this obviously minor concern of mine was ridiculous in the extreme. I don't know if this can be fixed because it may be difficult to program what is obvious. In this case my opponents was in check and could only move his king to 1 place to get out of check. Then a simple mate by my queen was clear. I did not abandon the game but went to leave this post and then returned.
This is a chess site and not a place to discuss relatvie problems in world events.
If you've got a problem, fine. Go ahead and say so. But getting mad about something so trivial is just snotty.
You could be taking your kid to get tested for radiation. Worried if his development will be affected. Knowing that he may get cancer in his 20's, and have to go through chemotherapy on and off for decades. And you face the same danger, that you will have to retire early, and you won't be able to afford to keep yourself alive, nor will your son. Imagine that could happen to you- and day after day you will have to live with that fear hanging over you as you try to rebuild your life. Can you even imagine? You gotta pick yourself out of the muck, struggle and scrape by to get back to where you were, and it might still get wiped out before you have a chance to enjoy it.
You could have played 3 or 4 blitz games and gotten a couple of beers and generally had a good time while you earned back those precious points. One day you are going to have a real problem, whether your car breaks down or you get laid off or a crazy militant dictator fires missiles at you. And you'll realize that every moment you aren't struggling, that is what's precious.
Thanks but I have had several real problems in my life. My father committed suicide, my mother was in a mental insitution from when I was 14 until she died, my daughter has developmental difficulties and I still have to take care of her even though she is nealy 30. I could think of more.
I go to chess.com to enjoy the game and forget about real life for awhile. Getting these points is a hobby of sorts and I like to play under good sportsmanship. That is why I made this post. To suggest that my concern indicates a lack of concern about the real life problems of the world or that I somehow equated this situation with these tragedies is insulting. But maybe this is over your head and you thought I meant that my point loss was as bad as what is happenninbg in Japan. If that is true I feel sorry for you.
I was just venting when I said I was mad as hell. I don't know how this got us all into a discussion of chess games as compared to the tragedies in life. I have only beem using chess.com for about 6 weeks and almost all the time the games exibit good sportsmanship. From one of these replies I guess that sinply quiting playing without resigning in the hopes your opponent will leave is a tactic that is used by a samll minority of players. That is not surprising to me but it deos "make me mad as hell".
It's silly to get angry because of one game, and it only causes you more trouble. That was, and is, my comment.
ALLIED air powers are bombing Lybia...Japan continues to recover from a horrible earthquake and tsunami with thousands dead and many more missing. And on a more tragic note griff013 is mad as hell and wants revenge due to the loss of some points.
Updates to follow on this travesty...
Corrected. This one isn't us by ourselves. This time we have the French... oh nevermind carry on.
All the stresses in our lives, from world events that sadden us, to our own little private hells that we have no choice but to live with, motivate us from time to time to seek out a little escapism by playing chess. But then in this attempt to find some momentary peace and calm, some butthead insults you, disrespects you, by their lack of courtesy. It can be frustrating, and voicing that frustration is ok. Still, each opponent agrees to give a set amount of time in which to play their game. And as such each player is allowed to employ any tactic he/she wishes with that time, including not making a move. If you cannot commit to finishing out the time allotted, you shouldn't start the game.

Not in the era of today's modern, super, usb fridges.

I agree that it is within the rules to use all your time even if you are not making a move to delay certain defeat. In this case however, I did not abandon the game or leave that site or in any fashion log out. I went to the forum to start this post and when I went back to the game, with plenty of time left to make my one mating move, I saw that the site had given me a loss for abandoning the game. They should fix the software so that if you stay on the site and have time left you have not abandonend the game.
Note to all; THIS IS NOT IMPORTANT IN YHE SCOPEP OF HUMAM LIVE. (don't want anymore replies along that line). I REALIZE NO ONE IS LIKELY TO FIX THE SOFTWARE BUT IT WOULD BE NICE.
You might consider playing shorter games, and also to block the opponent.
In the position in the game , a single premove would have win a game for you.
.............. or you get laid off or a crazy militant dictator fires missiles at you. And you'll realize that every moment you aren't struggling, that is what's precious.
People in Libya are facing this on orders form the mad dog.
my god, griff013! Speechless....of all things we can react too,he picks this. Maybe he got treated the way he responds to other chess situations ?
How about asking the people who run this site?
Click on "Help" in the upper right-hand corner and look around for an appropriate category and/or how to contact the "management" here.
Yeah this is not an earth-shaking issue but if it's important enough to post in a forum it's important enough to try and get an answer to your question, no matter how much ridicule you get (I'm not always the most sympathetic guy around but in this case it looks like some of us are just looking for an excuse to be snide and snotty)

Oh man. I so want one.

All you have to do is use a new browser screen to do other internet stuff, and the system will see you as still on the game.

I have had several occasions when someone is in a sure lose situation they just leave the game without resigning so I have to wait until their time has expired to win. What can be done about this?
