Possibility of a Triple check???

Sort:
PushyDiscovery

That is illegal.

PushyDiscovery

@NelsonMoore Yeah, but we are talking about standard chess. Plus, why not take on f7 with the queen. That wins by blowing up the king.

herdwars

So the position Nelson Moore is showing is not possible in atomic chess, the king is in check by the queen and by the bishop allready which cannot happen. Still i think that in atomic chess a triple check is possible...

We are talking about getting a triple check. Checkmate has no importance here.

PushyDiscovery

We are talking about standard chess

FortunaMajor

At least we know it's possible in atomic chess...

Even if in this position, white could castle, there is no way to give the 3rd check with the rook. Since diagonals are the only way castling could give double check, then the king and rook must be an even number of squares apart, meaning it would have to be queenside castling. The rook cannot give the 3rd check because it could never be able to land exactly in between the 2 diagonal checks, giving the 3rd check because the king goes on that square.

If 0-0-0-0 is legal.

PushyDiscovery

0-0-0-0 is not legal

I BET IT IS POSSIBLE IN CHESS 960

The only difference is the position of the pieces on the back row.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

The problem with castling is the pieces are on the back row, so they couldn't "UNBLOCK" any checks.

If one promotes a pawn to king then triplecheck becomes posible....

MickinMD

Moving any piece to cause a discovered check can only cause a check along one file, rank or diagonal and therefore can only cause one piece to apply check.  If the piece moved itself also causes check, that's double check.  There's no way to triple check.

FortunaMajor

Triple checks are possible in the four-way-chess. A new variant chess that chess.com introduced.

Double checks are really powerful, as we know. They are foundations for smothered mate and many other beautiful attacks.

The above position is absolutely legal. Checking with an engine, it finds no error in the calculation and says Kb6 is the move.  But is it really possible? Can't a tricky en passant or a pawn promotion execute a triple check some way?

this position is not legal. and not even a triple check...

Grace-MircheaLuslec

Unfortunately that doesn't quite work. 1...d5 is illegal because the queen pins it.
