Possible to learn all openings and variations?

Some people may agree that learning all of the openings in chess is just a waste of time. others say it helps a great deal. If one wants to become successful he or she must study, play and practice line by line. but memorizing lines isnt always easy.. What is your opinion on how many openings and variations one should learn? and is it worth it?
