I could just as easily say the same to you.

Of course...and that is what im saying.  Its the way i and many other my age were raised.  A firm handshake, and looking people in the eye is a sign of respect.

Laughing at people about it is a sign of immaturity.  But as i said...when youre older youll understand.

Godspawn can be very patronising. I have noticed this before in many of his posts.

If that is how my post came across my apologies, it wasnt my intent.  Just one more thing i need to work on.

Yea...he so patronising he apologised for it. Most easily would have just flamed on instead of trying to defuse the issue.

...yes, it is a cultural thing. In some cultures it is rude (China)...while in others it is not (Western Countries).

...also, many chess players are considered "anti-social"...so it would be natural for someone in this population to be "shy"...

Its ok clms...its what flags does.  He doesnt mean any harm, its just his schtick here.

Actually my post wasn't directed at flags but our friend Charles, but if that's how I came across my apologies... he he

I get that that's how you roll and I'm cool with it, but you shouldn't be offended just because the dude you're playing rolls a different way, y'know?

Laughing at people who get mad over stupid things is a sign that I find it amusing.

Growing older might make me wiser, but it probably won't make me think a different way.

I would make eye contact. Don't really pay much attention to the handshake, but I think eye contact is important to let your opponent know that you acknowledge him/her rather than pretending that (s)he is a computer. That would be disrespectful.

I have noticed that chess players never seem to look each other in the eye when they shake hands before and/or after a game. They usually look down at the chessboard. What's with that?

How do you tell if a chess player is an extrovert?

He looks at your shoes instead of his when he shakes your hand.

maybe the camera flash made them close the eyes.

Chess players are, in general, a very odd bunch. If you've played OTB for a long time in tournaments and clubs this fact is impossible to ignore. Not bad people but an odd fellowship for sure.

A Swiss friend of mine said once that it was rude to not look into the eyes of the handshake counterparty.

But now I know if I sit across from Ms. Pogonina to not look when shaking!

Oh, I'm sure you'll be looking, just not into her eyes...
