It's about the size of the picture. Chess.com automatically resizes your profile picture.
For mobile: crop your image to a square and resize it a little bit so the vertical sides are shorter then the horizontal ones.
For PC: crop your image to a square and resize the horizontal sides slightly shorter. Save it as PNG.
