I think the main problem with the greet message when the game comes up is that your name is listed as the sender.  If Chess.com was listed as the sender and you were introduced as the greeter, hopefully this would reduce the confusion.  The message could read something like this.

Chess.com:Hi! Welcome to our site.  Your Chess.com greeter will be (insert username).  Let (insert username) know how they can help you, (To reply, just type in the field below and hit Enter.)  (insert username) will get back to you when they see this game.

While my icon might say I am on-line, I could be surfing else where on this site on on the web for that matter, and I might not be checking my games.

Yes this would solve some of the confusion. Good job Seuss68

I have to agree that the text could use some tweaking to manage expectations. I'm happy to be a greeter, but new members do seem to have the expectation that I'm already at the other end--because, after all, they just got the (canned) message from me. Here's a typical example of what I get when I discover a new greeter game:

Jasn: Hi! Nice to meet you. I'll be your Chess.com Greeter - let me know how I can help you, and good luck! (To reply, just type in the field below and hit Enter.)

chessmaster2010: let me win

chessmaster2010: our move

chessmaster2010: your

I respond with:

Jasn: Sorry! I was playing another game. Didn't know this one had started.

At the moment I have several greeter games that appear to have been abandoned after the first move. I think it's safe to say some people are going away frustrated.

Being a Chess.com greeter is fun and I will continue to do it. But I have noticed that people joining the site think that I am on-line when the game starts. Some of them get a little testy when I wont make my move immediately after they make theirs.

But again bring a greeter is fun because I like being a help and answering questions. Anyone else running into this problem?

I just became a greeter a half hour ago and I already had this issue.  the player thought I was online and was impatient.  but I like being a greeter because it's a good way to answer questions directly.

I have the same problem. Newcomers seem to not know when you are offline, and they are very impatient for their opponent to move as it is.

I love being a greeter and have approx 250 games under my belt now, but I do wonder erik how many new members we are losing because I am sometimes not on line when their game starts. When I do go on line which is about twice a day, sometimes three times, and I see their annoyance, and frustration because they are expecting me to make a move, and cannot understand why I do not make a move. I always send them a message saying, sorry I was not on line when the game started, but hope we have a good game, and Good Luck. Yet many, many, times, I've (or Chess.com) lost them because I cannot get them to carry on with the game. I do check back sometimes to see if they are still an active member, but lots of times they are not. So I would suggest (if I'm not too bold) that the games are started between players who are only on line at the time, and we as greeters are given an alert when you have assigned us a new member. Can this be done?

I would like that very much as I spend roughly 12 hours a day in school, except for during the summer
