Promoting pawns: but not to a queen

In this game I underpromoted, because I wanted to check him, encourage him to give away his last rook and in the end, mate him(he and I might have been low on time as well).  This was the first game I've ever done it with a real chess purpose (not just because I was playing someone way worse than me).

Isn't that endgame the famous Saavedra study?

bullllet

Exactly. I was playing someone, and I tumbled on this position. I was thinking hard.  Then I suddenly remembered a position like this, and played it. He lost. Yay.

DoctorStrange

Excellent endgame bulletjohn!

Can you post some more?

I am very proud of this game. None of the coaches at my club managed to solve it. It was a hard game with her, and in the position, I was about to offer a draw, when I thought I saw a little line. I played it and managed to win. If any questions against the moves, please ask me.

Check out some of Nakamura's games. One is against Crafty (computer), and the other one is against Rybka.

Nice bump.  Not.

I guess if either the diagonal or horizontal movement/ coverage of the Queen would result in a stalemate, you'd have to choose either a bishop or a rook...
Perhaps if the promotion square is covered by your opponent but you have it counter covered... you could promote to a lesser piece to dissuade your opponent from taking the piece and losing the exchange....
