Proposal: fair play rating

Hello!

Since I have started playing chess on the internet I saw a lot of poor sportmanship, a sort of mercenary attitude regarding this beautiful game at all levels. By this I understand: playing for the win when being seriously down on material just to annoy and harrass your competitor, a bad attitude on the chat(like congrating a losing oponent with good game after taking two pawns or a knight, or even insulting) and, the most prominent of all - Refusing/Ignoring Rematches. Sometimes I feel like playing with a bunch of robots without heart or trolls...(lol).

My advice to chess.com staff is to implement and publicly display a fair rating system and, this way, all players to have an incentive to play clean. Besides this, all players should be asked if they prefer to play rematches or not and pair them with users having similar preferences. It may happen to be in a hurry and not be able to play a rematch so and then but NOT all the time, especially when winning after a mistake from your oponent and not by merit! Each player should have the posibiity to deny a few rematches, but not all challenges and, more specifically, play with someone else immediately afterwards. It's a malignant and childish attitude seen by me at all levels 800-2000.

If such a public fair rating system would be implemented I think that all of us will play chess on a better environment.

It is not against the sportsmanship policy to either play when down in material (even if clearly lost) nor is it against the sportsmanship policy to refuse rematches.  So these portions of your recommendations will certainly not be implemented (unless Chess.com were to update their sportsmanship policy in such a way - which is virtually impossible in my opinion).

They could do it if they want to...

Or should we ignore all challenges when winning because we will be ignored as well when losing? Many players here will just harrass their oponents in order to make a mistake. Then, refuse a rematch. That's about it.

As mentioned in my previous comment, players are not obligated to accept rematch requests as it in no way violates the sportsmanship policy on Chess.com (or other chess sites for that matter).

Harassing opponents can be reported and to prevent these problems, just go into focus mode where only the board and clock are on the screen

Exactly. No one owes you a rematch. They don't have to accept your rematch nor do they have to send you a rematch.

In this case, should I turn off the chat and deny all the requested rematches as well??? I can be the same kind of person as them if it's needed!

Hey, it's not about the rules, but about the kind of people we want to be and, eventually, the kind of players that we want to play with. Because there is no incentive to play rematches and other stuff almost no one wants to play them, as it will happen in OTB. This way, more and more players, after falling victim to this behaviour, then refuse to play others as well.

This way we have a domino effect and the place gets full of trolls and people without good will. If they will get a one week of free premium membership for being fair play maybe they will change their attitude. That's all.

Another site posts a “game completion rate”. It discriminates against those who play on the app while eating tacos where WiFi or cell service may be iffy. Plus, the app is in serious need of improvement.

Yes.

I don't know why people feel entitled to rematches and resignation from the opponent

JackRoach

You don't need a rematch.

Ziryab

For the record: I almost never offer a rematch, and accept such offers less than 1% of the time.

Tournaments, even Arena, help minimize harassment from those who feel entitled.

My opponent wants to play chess, even if they're losing? Blasphemy. Reported and banned.

AlbAmchess

I never rematch anyone unless it’s some kind of match. And no, I shouldn’t have to accept them.

No, you can keep playing for as long as you want even if you are completely losing. For one thing if time goes down enough and there is no increment the winning player may mess up and the losing player can pull of a draw/stalemate (of course that can happen even when time trouble isn’t the situation but less often). What is poor sportsmanship is leaving the game while keeping it open so time just runs out, but that has nothing to do with what you’re talking about anyway.

aayuchampion

a good example is my latest game

https://www.chess.com/game/live/14226223509

I was bishop down but I still played and then I got my piece back and then I won the game

and there are millions of examples of that

One time I was down a rook, two bishops, a queen, both knights, and 3 pawns and I still pushed through and managed to get a Mate In 3 when my opponent slipped up horribly. It happens.

Once in a bullet game I was up about 2 rooks and I blundered mate

In conclusion, it will be better if they remove the rematch option as long as you are mislead by others to play after winning with others, only to find yourself in the stupid position to be ignored when you want rematches!

By the way, to all the people commenting here against my idea, you don't show that you're really better than another player after just a game. You only show that you speculated a mistake! That's all!
