Great article recommendation.
Pro's and Con's of Chess.com

Some improvements to chess.com would be more access for ways to learn the game, and a less price for some features. three tactics puzzles are nice, but you won't improve as fast as you would if you had 10 a day.

Have you found a chess website with this many features that would give u any tactics puzzled like tactics trainer? cause i sure havent. I haven't yet found one side that is as easy to use and cheap for what u get as chess.com i must admit.

so RC, what exactly do you do in the real world? are you a physicist or just an informed amature?
Actually, anyone can sound like an informed amateur. All you need it google.com.
Now if you happen to find someone's real name under a roster of masters or doctorates in Physics, then that's what I would call a true physicist.
I am just an informed amateur .
Back in high school and during my first college years I was devouring books on physics. I wound up making a practice oriented career choice (dentistry) rather than pursuing a career physics because I like the prospect of being self employed.
While I agree that almost all information is readily available on the internet, it is much more entertaining and useful (if you are really interested) to stick with books.
Since most books assume little prior knowledge, you'll become familiar with the basics quite soon as they are repeatedly explained. Some explain things better than others.
The best physics books I've read are (in no particular order)
Charles Seife - The Alpha and the Omega (astronomy)
Charles Seife - Decoding the universe (information science / astronomy)
Brian Greene - The Fabric of the Cosmos (quantum theory / astronomy)
you know, we had a word for kids like you in high school. i won't tell you what it is in case you dentists have some sort of telepathic ability and my dentist will suddenly make my life more unenjoyable. hehehe
I really do enjoy this thread!
Where else can you read something like "I am not a scientist but I watched a show on PBS about string theory"?
i watched some shows on the operation channel, too. want me to remove your appendix?
On a slightly more serious note,
Is there a place on chess.com to view and discuss current international chess events such as the Olympiad that's going on right now?
Whaat?? Are you crazy? Look at today's hot topics to see what are the subjects discussed here. Ah, and there is another subject, namely cheating. It has its own forum and it's very popular. Basically each time when an account of a visible member is closed, his friends come and say "no way he cheated, that's so unfair".
Bondocel, I looked in Hot Topics before I posted, I see quite a bit of stuff, but nothing like "Chess Olympiad" or "Naka drew Kramnik" or "How on earth could Carlsen lose to Jobava". Is there anything like that here?
Unfortunately not, and if someone starts such a topic, it would be almost invisible among interesting topics like "will a women win the WC" or "word association". Thus, there will be few or no answers. That's why I stopped asking/posting anything that is chess related here.
By the way, where is the game of Carlsen? That is really a surprise!

Jobava is over 2700 so it isnt that big a surprise that he could beat Carlsen , especially with white. The elite players have inflated/bloated ratings. Why do you think they avoid strong Open events ? Whats most surprising to me so far is how well the team from Viet Nam is doing !

SonofPearl often covers these events in articles. You might try perusing his recent content:

My experience has been quite different. I've asked lots of chess related questions (on another account as well) and every time there have been loads of people trying to help. Just make sure the stuff you post isn't too inane.
EDIT:
For example:http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/question-about-quotthe-art-of-attack-in-chessquot and http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-analysis/interesting-middlegame-enough-compensation-for-the-pawn

chess.com is just a microcosm of the real world. you can have a positive view of it, or a negative one. you can find stupid stuff, or quality. it depends on your attitude and what you look for.
:)

Ok, Westy. But what about discussions about the chess world outside of chess.com?
If someone posts something interesting then yes I think you'll be surprised a lot of the time. Admittedly that stuff gets less posts than for example the latest "who's the greatest?" thread. But try to make the topics worthwhile and they'll get their fair share of responses most of the time I think.

Chess.com is certainly the best place to play and learn chess.
Why ain't there any chess960 against the computer?

Well surly there is some "uncertainity" about that!
It would be nice if tactics trainer and analyses board will be maintained on average. If you didn't analysed a game last week you should be allowed to analyse 2 this week.

There are groups and forum threads about Chess960 all over chess.com.
I mean, who cant afford 3.99, 5.99 per month?!
(1) People in the third world (where even $1 is a lot of money)
(2) people who do not have a steady job (e.g.: contract job like me)
(3) students who yet have no income and have to depend on loan or daddy's allowance
all fair points.
for the rest of you,
