Provisional Rating, What Section do I Register For?

Hey Chess.com'ers,

I have a USCF provisional rating of 1716. I'm preparing to register for a tournament. Do I register in the section that my provisional rating falls under? Or do I register in the unrated? I don't think I'm playing at 1716 strength, so I'd like to avoid playing in the 1700 -- 2000 section.

Thanks,

UNi

I'd like to know too. If a win a provision game, my provisional rating will be 400 points higher than my opponent's. Does that mean I have to play in a section that high next time?

You would have to register in the 1700-2000 section.

Provisional rating means you are NOT unrated and generally you wouldn't be allowed to register in a lower section.

Imagine how the 1300s would feel competing for trophies or money v. a 1700 provisional.

So you go where all the other 1700s are, or higher if you were feeling good.

OK, thanks all!
