Puzzles Aren't Improving My Game At All

In the past year, my puzzle score has gone up about 400 points and I am over 2000.

But it hasn't meant a thing when it comes to playing chess.  In fact, my rating says that I have gotten worse at chess in the last year.  My rapid rating has dropped over 100 points and my daily rating is down quite a bit too.  It's hit the point where I don't want to join team matches because I don't feel like handing the other team an automatic 2 points before the match even starts.

Of course, I know I am still a raw novice despite playing a lot for years.  I've been told "do the lessons and the puzzles and you'll improve."  Nope.  It's not happening.  I've managed to get a lot worse.

Perhaps you are seeing the puzzles as non-competitive and, therefore, handling them better.  I would guess that the knowledge acquired from the puzzles is not impacting the rated games because something else is happening when you engage in a competitive game.

What you have not been told is that

"learning takes time".

You may have to drill hundreds or thousands of games before you see the application of the tactics involved.

Not forgetting to mention that losing 100 rating points is pretty normal for a player who started afresh having learnt something new or practised lots of tactics. The climb up will come at a later time.

Yes, when I engage in a competitive game, I am playing against someone who is a better player than I am.  It's not difficult to find someone who fits that description, since I am absolutely the worst chess player who ever lived.
