hi, I play from February , i'm about 800 and from yesterday I'm in the "champions" championship. yesterday i met a player, surely better than me, and i remained with the only king when both we had less than a minute. he had a Bishop and a queen (promoved pawn). when I saw that he had less time than me I started to run with the king, like a... crazy fly. so I caught a draw. he accused me for no having character and reproached that when a player is so disadvantaged is supposed to abandon. I'm not agree, because I didn't cause wasting of time. but actually my king... had lost every . .. "reality". what's your opinion? it's better fight and run and never give up or it is more professional leave?

I don't agree from his statement, it depends on the situation if you want to resign or not. My coach always quote me on this, "Do not resign until the end of the game, there's always a chance that your opponent will be in a disadvantage and use that to your advantage. Until the end, even if you win or lose, you did your best." And that's what I always do even if I am losing. Your opponent's statement shouldn't have to reflect on your sportsmanship, it just shows how courageous you are to keep going even if you are losing.

You can resign or play on as you see fit.
If your opponent dislikes timing out, then he should play with increment.
Your opponent should practice the 5 basic checkmates instead of complaining when he cannot checkmate in time.

You did the right thing. It is not a matter of character....it's chess. You couldn't win at that point, so playing for a draw was exactly what you should have done, and what every good chess player would have done.
