question about notation from a beginner

Hi, all.........I'm moving pieces around on my own, following the notation in a book, and I came across this:

16. Re5 Nde5

Two things. First, my knight on the D file can't move to e5 (which means I probably screwed up the moves somewhere). Second, shouldn't black's move read Ndxe5 since the rook just moved there? Or am I missing something about notation ?
Thanks!

Yes, as I understand things it should.

Well, one way of looking at it is that there is a mistake in the notation not reading Ndxe5 and that you messed up the position somehow because your d-knight cannot move there.

The other explanation is that you do have the position right and the move is not a capture, but that e5 is a typo and it means e4 or e6 or whatever square on the e-file is legal for you to move your knight to.

the "x" is not necessary.  It can be used to denote a capture, but I dont use it.

Ya, I played it backwards and realized it's supposed to read:

16. Re5   Nde4

From there it made sense.

Thanks, folks!
