Im watching recaps on YouTube from the WC. How long before the game do the players get to know the starting position? I can't find this info.

I don't know exactly, but I would imagine they would only find out right before the game starts. The entire point of this variant (with 960 possible starting positions) is to help negate opening theory and preparation, so it wouldn't really be consistent to let the players know what to expect say the day before.

I'm not 100% sure, but to my understanding, the random position is generated just before the players sit down and then they play. Granted, there are some chess ceremonial things like the "first move" for photos before the "real" first move is played, so the players probably do have a few seconds or a minute to think about the position before the game starts, but I'm virtually certain there isn't time for opening preparation.

Do the play the same starting position in both games between two oponents?

I'm not sure what this question is asking because of how it is worded.

If you are asking if the opponents (white and black in the same game) have identical starting positions then yes; the starting position for one side is randomly selected and then the second side sets up symmetrically to that.

If you are asking if the opponents in different games (same round, different board) have the identical starting position, then I'm not certain of the WC Fischer Random format, but I'd guess no they are different starting positions for each game.

I meant the two consecutive games between same oponents when they switch colors.

Oh okay. I'm honestly not sure what the rules in WC for this variant would be. I would imagine they would switch colors AND switch starting position, but not 100% certain. In "regular" matches for Fischer Random, when sides switch colors for a new game, a new starting position is chosen, but I don't know if WC changes this for the format.

I'm still curious about the exact rules when to see the starting position. Because I would imagine in a 25+5 minute game (which I believe they play?) it would make a difference if you know the position right when you start the clock, or if you have a few minutes to prepare.

Just saw this YT clip where it appears that they "reveal" the random position as it is generated and then the players walk over to the boards. If this is the case, I don't know how much time there is between them seeing it and starting the game, but it would certainly be enough to mentally visualize what opening move you want to play and loose ideas, but probably not enough time to "study" the position and prepare.

All the regulations are posted on their site: https://www.frchess.com/regulations

For the two game matches, the same position is used both games.

They are given 15 minutes before the game to study the opening position.

That's for this tournament anyway.

It's in rule 4.2 if you follow the fide link above. So I guess the 15 minutes is a rule, not just for this tournament.

(Edit)

Wait a minute, that link is for this tournament...

Yeah, they get 15 minutes to study the starting position before the game starts (for THIS event anyway). They can't use an engine but I don't know if they have to study it alone or if other players are allowed to evaluate with them.

Also, I think everybody plays 2 games with each position then it changes to another position for the next 2 game and so on. That way everyone gets to play the same position as white and black once each.
