question on notation

I am reading a book where they use the standard notation, with ! and ? for good and bad moves.  But they also will follow this with + and - as well, and sometimes the + is on top of the -.  What does this mean?

It's used to indicate which side has an advantage.

  • +- White is winning
  • ± (or +/-) Advantage for White
  • +/= Slight advantage for White
  • = Equal
  • =/+ Slight advantage for Black
  •  (or -/+) Advantage for Black
  • -+ Black is winning.
  • ∞ Unclear

+- White is winning   -+ Black is winning

+/- White is better   -/+ Black is better

Usually somewhere in most books is a page or 1/2 page explaining the international notation.
