Quick notation question?

After, say...

1. e4 e6

2. d4 d5

3. Nc3 Bb4

Would you write 4. Nge2 or 4. Ne2 , or are both considered "standard?" I've seen it both ways.

4.Nge2 is correct.

also if, let's say you have two rooks on the same file - a1 and a8 and move one to a4, you should write R8a4.

or if you have three queens, of which every one can move to a square and they are on the same rank or file, you write full notation like Qd8b6.

If the knight on c3 was not pinned, you would need to specify 4.Nge2 since either knight could move to e2.  But since the c3 knight is pinned, 4.Ne2 is good enough.

I think even chessbase and such writes it as 4.Nge2, but technically, yeah, 4.Ne2 is correct.

atleast we don't have to deal with stuff like exd6 e.p# or my personal favorite (which never sadly happend $&%@ing Lasker) 0-0-0#

well sometimes you can specify that a capture was made e.p because either more than one capture is possible

Wait when would there be two legal axb6s?

Avatar of Ben_Dubuque

no no no I meant either something like cxb6 or cxd6 and one of them is an e.p

Avatar of Mainline_Novelty

Yeah but why would you need to specify if cxb6 is distinctly different from cxd6?

Avatar of Ben_Dubuque

meh good point, I guess it is just a nice thing I would do.

I initially misunderstood what you meant about the e.p. example, but I think I see now.  You're right, white can't have both moves cxb6 e.p. and cxb6 not-e.p. in the same position. If the black pawn is on b6, e.p. is not possible.  If the black pawn just arrived on b5, the capture has to be e.p.

BTW, my O-O-O# composition is flawed since the less-interesting Rd1 also mates.

I mean practically every position 0-0-0# works with another move that places a rook in position to mate.

nice one Remellion, That is the only kind of situation I could think of that might work.
