With the Elo system, it's built to even out over a larger number of matches toward your true current ability level. It will correct for 'free' rating in some matches by dropping more sharply upon subsequent losses.
"Cheap" rating

Your first few games will affect your rating more or less so than in later ones. Timeouts are actually pretty common with new members of chess.com. Playing members that have been here more than 3 months will lower your chances of your opponent timing-out on you, thus, your "TRUE" skill level will start to show. It just takes some time. : )

Just be patient the more games u play the more it will level out. It will most likely take about 100 games before u have an idea of ur level rating skill here....
So I've been trying to actually play chess against actual people here, but I've run into an odd (probably common issue).
Thus far I've won one unrated game (my "welcome" game) I've lost three games (willful resignations when I saw there was no hope and mate was emminent in one to two moves) and have won 6 rated games on time outs. In a couple cases, my opponents made *NO* moves at all in tournament games.
My rating dropped rather precipitously at the beginning, as I figured it would. Now, thanks to 6 rated "wins" by timeout, I've shot back up. I'm a little concerned as this does not even come close to representing my actual skill level.
Is this massive fluctuation of rating just due to my limited number of games played? Also, is it common to have so many timeouts in games? One guy gave up after loosing his Queen and a knight and he hadn't even begun to develop anything else.
