"Your opponent has disabled chat"

I have no Facebook either, I'm quite sure it is the root of all Evil.

I have chat disabled, not cause I'm concerned about abusive people or distractions, but because I play either on my phone or tablet and it's just too cumbersome to try and chat and play at the same time on those devices. if I played on a computer I would most likely have chat turned on.

I play on my phone alot too, I know what you are saying.

Serious question here : why do people disable chat during blitz games? I find it rude, I go to type in "good luck" and the message comes up "your opponent has disabled chat".

This immediately makes me think : "well screw you too buddy!" and I kinda lose the desire to even play.

I can see someone doing it if It is interfering or I am chatting constantly through the game. But to start off with chat disabled? why bother?

So much for saying good game at the end.

At one time, I disabled chat at the start of every game; because not everyone returns my friendliness and there are some very rude players out there.

I find in Online/Daily chess people are not so rude, perhaps because we are stuck together for days, not minutes

i keep chat on because people like to rage after losing, and then complain about not being given a chance to play white like it friggin matters LMAO.

I love it when they decide to come rage on my wall, i treat each comment like a badge of admission to butthurt.

If you find people are too rude, too verbose, what have you, I guess you can either let them continue talking too much, which is a mistake for two reasons. First, they take time to type which detracts from their play. Second, their mind is more on how to come up with something clever than how to win on the board. Or you can disable chat, which may have the effect of putting them out of their comfort zone, which itself may also increase your chances of winning.

Life is all about tradeoffs.

I guess there a 2 schools of thought here, the serious competetive Chess players and the recreational players. I myself am the latter, even when I play OTB I will always chat and socialize with my opponent, it's casual, social, fun. Unless you are a professional player I don't really get the whole talking is forbidden thing.

I think it is not as easy to divide chess players like that.

no I'm not "professional" or "seriously competive"- but I'm earnest and I play to win.

I want to improve on chess; and the idea of improving and getting much better at a hobby like this is very important to me.  I don't mind chat; but I'm not in a game just to talk.  If I have someone SO beat that they decide to make me wait 20moves- I'll gladly collect the point.  I've definitely beaten them.  same idea, if accuse me of using a chess engine.

such rude posts only means I am doing better than I used to.

I've never intended to disable chat , but i can't enable it. What's the catch?

Generally speaking, if it is disabled when the game starts it is configured to automatically disabled  in their settings. It isn't a statement about you specifically.

In other words, sometimes if your opponent doesn't disable chat, your chat disables your opponent.

Pretty clever, huh? Embarassed

i understand what you are saying but i had a lot of really rude people while playing i started doing it

for me, its not just about winning, the game is fun, and its more fun when there is some interaction between the players besides just making moves. I find Chess to be a form of entertainment, and the entertainment value goes up with some witty banter thrown in.

Just wondering, I tried to greet back but my chat won't let me. Did I disable myself on chat mode? Or was I muted by the mod?

You are not muted as you wouldn't of been able to made the above posts.  To check your game chat settings follow the follow Home (Top Right) - Settings - Live Chat - on that list you will see game chat set as per wish.

I can understand why somebody would disable chat in a short game, but why in a non-tournament 3-day move game?  If you don't want to socialize, there are great computer programs out there that will mimic my questionable play.

FYI, The website name is "chess.com, not chat.com"

Disabling chat is easier than typing “fu”

I think you are still early in your chess learning experience. Chess is fun but it's also cold blooded and unforgiving once you start getting into higher ratings (and I don't say that as bad thing, it's just a strong dose). Sometimes I consider disabling chat because it's too unpredictable depending on my opponent. And I don't care about rematches either, but I tend to accept them if my opponent offers it.

If this is true, why are you even bothering to comment? Shouldn't you just be playing chess instead!

I have noticed that I win more than half of my games against people who disabled chat, so I encourage more of you to do it.  I think, well, you're not going to talk to me, so I'll talk to you with my 16 little friends.  There isn't much time for chat in a 5 minute blitz game; several games ago, a fellow American opponent spent about 90 seconds in a relatively simple situation, so I entered "dude!" and he immediately made a horrible, fatal blunder.
