"Your opponent has disabled chat"

I did it due to morons trying to put me off by just typing in the chatbox constantly   ie holding down the keyboard etc.

Other people moaning and whinging, crying and generally being bad behaved.   So just disabled.

I've seen this being done with me numerous times as well. In general, it would nice if we could say "hi", "good game" or "thanks for the game", but I find nothing really wrong with disabling chat. I have found many very abusive people who write whatever they wish.

Furthermore, the guys don't know each other, so it is understandable they do not wanna talk and have distractions. Although I would discourage such an attitude of disabling chat, I think it is perfectly fine.

i see disabling chat as a weakness. meaning you are easily distracted by some flippant comment that may have no meaning.

I'd like a setting that disables playing people who have disabled chat. If they have chat disabled, I don't want to play them. They come across like they lack sportsmanship, though I know some people are rude and may have turned them off from chatting. However, I want to enjoy the game, just like they want to. If they find it enjoyable to never talk to anyone, fine. Good for them. I find it offensive when they disable chat and won't engage in proper sportsmanship. I'm not a bot. I'm a human. Engage me like one.

Imagine playing for fun instead of harvesting awkward small talk from strangers online, sportsmanship? passive aggressive guilt tripping, youre exactly the reason I dont have chat turned on.

I've been playing online chess for over 20 years now.

I've dealt with enough "F___ you!" and "LOL idiot" comments to know that the chat is mostly useless and offers very little, except for annoyance.

I play chess to enjoy the game. I use the forums when I want to chat with others.

I didn't say you shouldn't feel free to turn chat off. I just suggested that there should be an additional setting for other people so they don't have to play you. They may enjoy the interpersonal element of the game. I play in in-person tournaments. We are expected to shake hands, be respectful, etc. If a guy sat across from me and refused to interact, it would be weird. So, chess.com can accommodate both of us. You can turn off chat, effectively disabling my ability to interact with you. You don't want to hear me. That's fine. And I can choose not to play you so that I don't have to deal with people like you. That should be fine, too. You have chosen to disable one of the features of the game _for the other person_.

Right, but there's a way to deal with people like that: report them and/or disable chat for that specific game. And all I'm suggesting is that if you, as a player, want to preemptively disable someone else's ability to use all features on the platform (., chat), the other people should have a setting available to avoid playing you. Currently, if I start a game and you're my opponent, I can only abort or play you. If I abort too often, chess.com punishes me. But a game costs me 10-20 minutes of my time, and I don't want to spend 10-20 minutes of my time playing a non-human opponent who refuses to interact with me. I only write before and after games. Occasionally, if I make a mouseclick error or blunder, I mention it briefly. And, if someone is a jerk interacting with me, I stop the conversation by blocking the chat the rest of the way (a better feature that depends on the behavior of the specific opponent). It isn't much interaction, but I find the experience much better than "Chat Disabled".
Doesn't that make sense? ha

How do you disable chat during a game?

Have you considered that some dont speak english and/or don’t feel comfortable talking?

Different situations, I suppose. I play blitz and bullet - so there really isn't any time to chat at all.

To disable during a game:
https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8609218-how-can-i-play-without-chat-messages?utm_source=chatgpt.comYou click the exclamation point, then "Disable chat".

Sure, that can happen. Again, I'm not saying they shouldn't have the ability to disable the chat and play chess. I'm just suggesting that other users should be able to choose never to play them. Not a big deal one way or the other.

Thanks, this way I don’t have to always disable chat {^_^}

This is pure BS.

Yeah but there are some creeps in chats, and I disabled my chat because I don't want people giving racism, sexism, etc in the chat if it ever does happen.

But why does it matter that someone doesn't want to talk during a game. It doesn't lack sportmanship or show that they are weak, it's literally because they dont want to talk. they just don't. they might not speak english, it might be because their parents told them to. it's not offensive, it's just their choice.

I am a guy who likes to chat, I could be chatting even in bullet chats
Still I think that a disabled chat is not violation of sportsmanship

There are different perspectives for different players.

I play at the expert/master level. Players at my level don't treat the game casually - they take it seriously and often aggressively. The percentage of opponents that I would need to report/disable chat for is unfortunately high - I've learned this after many years of having the chat always on.

It's perhaps a drawback of climbing the ranks - the higher you go, the more combative and hostile your opponents tend to be.

These days, I don't even bother with it. My chat is off by default, and my chess-playing enjoyment is much higher.

I could turn on chat and invite the toxic incel trolls to harass me while I play, or I can keep it off and just play chess the way I want to. In tournaments, you can’t talk to your opponents and it’s a beautiful thing.
