Hi, i've been improving my chess- up to nearly 1600 and wondered if anyone could tell me if that equates to B grade player ...and at what point might one have a ratings close to NM.

Not really - Also, it depends on whether you mean 1600 over the board, 1600 blitz here, etc.  Blitz ratings here are useless.  There are players with Blitz ratings here over 2000 and don't don't understand a lick of positional play, and anything other than cheap shot tactics that can be easily overlooked in blitz, don't make you better at chess.  Others, like myself, have low blitz ratings because we experiment here with new openings, and don't really care about our blitz results here.

In the United States, the USCF has what are called "Classes" (not "Grades"), but they are not based on rating, they are based on rating performance.  To be a Class A player, you need 5 tournaments with a Class A Performance.  The classes are a bunch of baloney, and should be ignored.  The highest one you can get without breaking 2200 is Candidate Master, which I got back in 2002.

Until you have an "Over the Board" rating, most ratings are useless.  When you can sustain a 2200 Over The Board rating, you are a master.  For the title of FIDE Master, you need to sustain a 2300 rating.
