I played rapid chess and ran out of time while I was up 16 points. My opponent had 7 minutes left. Not sure why I lost. Could someone explain. Thank you.
Lemme explain: you lost because you ran out of time. Specifically, because no matter how many points your are up, if you cannot get a checkmate or a resignation FROM YOUR OPPONENT, then you will not win. Running out of time is a loss for the person who ran out, unless, the opponent of the person running out of time does not have the appropriate pieces to checkmate. If this is the situation, then it is a draw.
