If you do a puzzle and fail, then retry, the returns listed as unrated.

There are two ways to solve puzzles. The ones that you find as 'puzzles' are the rated ones. And there's another option of custom puzzles where you can solve puzzles under a specific theme, these are unrated puzzles. So, I think you are using both of them unknowingly!
