Strange indeed, if all other factors are equal. But are they? The rating system may take into account the variability of the rating, as in, how many games did each player play? I don't know the exact formula, but I think that this may have something to do with it.

so, I'm curious: why does a loss against a player with a rating closer to my own sometimes result in a larger rating adjustment than a loss against a much lower rated player? What do you think is the reasoning behind that?
(ex: loss vs. 1270= -48, loss vs. 783= -40). Strange?
