rating fluctuations

I will never understand how it’s even possible to fluctuate between a 1900 rating and a 1700 rating. How is it humanly possible that when I’m on a winning streak that 1900 ratings are making ridiculous blunders that 1700 rating players don’t make when I’m on a losing streak. Something just isn’t adding up.

what do you think is the cause of this then

I honestly don’t know. I do think that cheating is a part of it

Yeah, it seems so weird. I usually blame it on myself and my play, but it seems like the other players act differently if you’re having a good or bad chess day. There should be a name for that effect.

And you think that doesn't give any sense? I am in a daily game with a guy. 2 games actually white/black. I am currently 1900 rapid, 1600 blitz, 1500 bullet. He is 600 bullet, 700 blitz and 1000 rapid. But in daily we are both 1600 and he's beating me in both games we play, literally outplaying me on quality, finding all the best critical moves.
Not the first time I am playing someone like that, but..... Am I the only one thinking something isn't right here?

Daily games are pretty hard. Giving players legal access to the opening database for daily makes them formidable in the opening. If you can survive that with a good position, you can most likely beat them tactically.

It is typical to have a bell shape rating where the center is your actual.ability. Normal distribution

I think it’s not cheating. Many variables come into play, the amount of sleep you got, your mental state, your physical state. Your ability to play chess is more than just a collection of your chess knowledge, it is you ability to access this chess knowledge to its best extent. If you are playing poorly and losing then I suggest that you should create some sort of ritual to restart your mind. It can be simple, for me, I like to go for a walk, get a small snack (banana usually) and have a drink of water. Hope this helps

I’ve dropped from 1450 to 1100 — as tends to happen once a year 😅. It’s usually the result of a stretch of careless play, fully aware I’ll climb back stronger 💪. After all, it’s just an internet rating 🎯 — and at that level, it hardly matters 🤷‍♂️. I have a sense of my true ceiling 🧠, and I know that if I don’t play well, losses are inevitable ⚔️.

So now begins, once again, the familiar journey: the climb from 1100–1000 back to 1500 🔄♟️. Here we go — one more time 😄🔥.

That's true, but I don't think this is the case. We finished our opening more or less equal, in one of our games I even had the upper hand for a moment, just a little. But he's finding the critical moves that are very difficult to see in my opinion, in terms of material it's still equal but he's finding the right moves to slowly undermine and destabilise my position and trying to force me into trades that don't benefit me and so on... No 1000 rapid and 700 blitz player plays like this, come on

Daily games are just hard bro. Your opponents might be spending 10+ hours on each move.

First of all, no one spends 10 hours on a move and second, it's not about time spent on a move to begin with. If you give Magnus 30 seconds and you yourself 24 hours on a move, Magnus is still going to crush you, because 1500 plays differently than 500 just like 3000 plays differently than 1500. You'll never see what Magnus sees in a position in front you, that's why he wins and you lose and this is the same thing. Regardless of any extra time

Yes, I believe so too 🤔. In fact, Chess.com itself acknowledges that certain irregular behaviors 🕵️‍♂️ do occur on the platform—they’ve publicly recognized their presence 📄. So if you’re asking whether there’s any element of that involved, the answer is: yes, such elements do exist 🌫️, and the site has officially admitted as much ✅.
